CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

People sometimes become sick because of infections, diseases, or injuries. When this happens, they may need medicines to help them recover. These medicines are called drugs. Some drugs are made from natural sources such as plants, while others are manufactured in laboratories and factories.

Drugs should always be used correctly and only under the guidance of qualified health professionals because improper use can be harmful.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of drugs, the two main types of drugs, examples of each type, and the importance of drugs in maintaining good health.

MEANING OF DRUGS

Drugs are substances used to prevent, treat, control, or cure diseases and illnesses. They help people maintain good health when used correctly and under the guidance of qualified health professionals.

Drugs should only be taken according to the instructions of a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, or other qualified healthcare provider.

Examples of Drugs

Some common examples of drugs include:

  • Paracetamol – used to relieve pain and reduce fever.
  • Amoxicillin – an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.
  • Ibuprofen – used to reduce pain, fever, and inflammation.
  • Artemether/Lumefantrine – used to treat malaria.
  • Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) – used to prevent and treat dehydration caused by diarrhoea.
  • Herbal medicines prepared from medicinal plants, such as ginger, neem, or aloe vera, when used appropriately.

Drugs are substances used to prevent, treat, control, or cure diseases. Examples include Paracetamol, Amoxicillin, Ibuprofen, Artemether/Lumefantrine, Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS), and some herbal medicines. Drugs are beneficial when used correctly and should always be taken according to the advice of qualified health professionals.

TYPES OF DRUGS

There are two main types of drugs:

1. Naturally Occurring Drugs

Naturally occurring drugs are obtained from natural sources such as plants, animals, and minerals. They are commonly called herbal or natural medicines.

Examples of Naturally Occurring Drugs:

  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Neem leaves
  • Aloe vera
  • Bitter leaf
  • Clove

2. Synthetic Drugs

Synthetic drugs are medicines manufactured in laboratories and pharmaceutical factories using chemicals.

Examples of Synthetic Drugs:

  • Paracetamol
  • Amoxicillin
  • Ibuprofen
  • Artemether/Lumefantrine (anti-malaria medicine)
  • Cough syrup
  • Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS)

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATURALLY OCCURRING AND SYNTHETIC DRUGS

1. Naturally occurring drugs come from natural sources, while synthetic drugs are manufactured in laboratories and factories.

2. Naturally occurring drugs are often prepared from plants, animals, or minerals, while synthetic drugs are produced using chemical processes.

3. Both types of drugs are used to prevent, treat, or control diseases when used correctly.

The two main types of drugs are naturally occurring drugs and synthetic drugs. Naturally occurring drugs come from natural sources such as plants, while synthetic drugs are produced in laboratories and factories. Both are important in treating diseases and maintaining good health when used properly.

IMPORTANCE OF DRUGS IN MAINTAINING GOOD HEALTH

Drugs are important because they help people stay healthy and recover from illnesses when used correctly.

Importance of Drugs

1. They help treat diseases and infections.

2. They relieve pain and discomfort.

3. They reduce fever.

4. They help prevent certain diseases through vaccination and other preventive medicines.

5. They help people recover more quickly from illness.

6. They control long-term health conditions such as asthma and diabetes.

7. They improve the quality of life of sick people.

8. They help save lives during serious illnesses and emergencies.

9. They promote healthy growth and development by treating illnesses promptly.

10. They help people remain active and productive.

PROPER USE OF DRUGS

To maintain good health, drugs should be used responsibly by:

1. Taking drugs only when prescribed or recommended by a qualified health professional.

2. Following the correct dosage and instructions.

3. Avoiding self-medication.

4. Checking the expiry date before using any drug.

5. Keeping drugs out of the reach of children.

6. Storing drugs according to the instructions on the label.

Drugs are important because they prevent, treat, and control diseases, relieve pain, reduce fever, save lives, and help people maintain good health. However, drugs should always be used correctly and responsibly under the guidance of qualified health professionals.
