PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and be able to:

1. identify drugs that are commonly abused;

2. discuss effects of drugs abuse.

3. explain the social and economic effects of drug/substance abuse.

4. educate others on drugs abuse.

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of Pictures of mad people; posters on identification of drug abuse; etc.

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTION

Drugs are substances (liquid, solid or gas) that are used to cure or prevent illness.

 

MEANING OF DRUG ABUSE 

Drug abuse is the wrong (misuse) of drugs to get self drive. Drugs used this ways are not prescribed by doctors, nurses or pharmacists.

DRUG THAT ARE COMMONLY ABUSED

There are so many drugs which are being abused by people. Commonly abuse drugs are aspirin, valium, antibiotics, etc. Also, some substance when taken change the action of the body.

Some of the commonly abused drugs are called by the following popular names:

1. Cocaine

2. Cannabis

3. Igbo

4. Indian hemp

5. Heroine

6. Heroin

7. Valium

8. Madrax

LESSON TWO – EFFECTS OF DRUG ABUSE ON HEALTH

1. Respiratory tract infection

2. Increased blood pressure

3. Stroke

4. Mental disorder

5. Blindness

6. Loss of weigh Stroke

7. Brain fatigue

8. Lung disease

9. Paralysis (inability to walk)

10. Death, etc.

It can also affect some body organs permanently.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF DRUGS ABUSE

1. Poor performance in school

2. Truancy

3. School drop out

4. Financial problems

5. Poor work

6. Poor relationships with other people and family

7. Violence in the family

8. Social outcast

9. Army robbery, etc.

LESSON TWO – WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS 

As stated in performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions.

2. Guides class discussion on health and socio-economic effects of drugs/substances abuse;

Tells children stories about who abuse drugs;

Pupil’s Activities – Listen and learn from the stories. 

3. Arranges for a guess talk on drug/substance abuse;

Pupil’s Activities – Listen and learn from the guest talk.

4. Produces drama sketches on drug;

Pupil’s Activities – Make posters for campaigning against drug abuse;

Pupil’s Activities – Educate against drug abuse.

CONCLUSION 

• To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson (drug laws and their enforcement).

LESSON EVALUATION

Pupils to:

1. mention the names of some hard drugs;

2. enumerate three health problems associated with drug abuse;

3. explain the social and economic effects of drug/substance abuse;

4. display posters and use them to educate against drug abuse.
