WEEK 2 – STRUCTURE

WORD FORMATION – NOUNS FROM ADJECTIVES

Some nouns are formed from adjectives by adding suffixes like –ness, –ity, –dom, –ship. A noun formed from an adjective often names a quality, state, or condition.

1. Using –Ness, Add –ness to adjectives to form nouns that show a state or quality.

Adjective – Noun, Sentence

kind – kindness, Her kindness made everyone happy.

happy – happiness, I felt great happiness on my birthday.

dark – darkness, The room was filled with darkness.

 

2. Using –ity, Add –ity to adjectives to form nouns that express quality or condition.

Adjective – Noun, Sentence

active – activity, Reading is a good activity.

honest – honesty, Honesty is the best policy.

possible – possibility, There is a possibility of rain tomorrow.

 

3. Using –Dom, Add –dom to adjectives to show state, domain, or condition.

Adjective – Noun, Sentence

wise – wisdom, Her wisdom helped us make a good decision.

free – freedom, All children need freedom to play.

 

4. Using –ship, Add –ship to adjectives to show position, quality, or state.

Adjective – Noun, Sentence

friend – friendship, Our friendship has lasted for years.

leader – leadership, Good leadership brings success.

 

SUMMARY,
