CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

A dictionary is a book that contains words arranged in alphabetical order with their meanings, pronunciations, spellings, and uses.

IMPORTANCE OF A DICTIONARY

1. A dictionary helps pupils to:

ALPHABETICAL ORDER

Words in a dictionary are arranged in alphabetical order from A to Z.

Example – ant, ball, cat, dog, egg

GUIDE WORDS

Guide words are found at the top of dictionary pages. They help readers quickly locate words.

Example – If the guide words are: farmfast

All the words on that page will come between farm and fast alphabetically.

STEPS FOR FINDING WORDS IN A DICTIONARY

  • Know the first letter of the word.
  • Arrange words alphabetically.
  • Use guide words at the top of the page.
  • Read carefully until the word is found.

Correct Alphabetical Order – apple, banana, carrot, mango, orange

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions about vocabulary and word meanings.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils respond to the teacher’s questions and mention some words they know.

2. The teacher organizes the pupils into groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.
