FORMAL LETTER – FEATURES OF FORMAL LETTER

A formal letter is a letter written for official or serious purposes. It is written to people in authority such as principals, teachers, government officials, companies, or organizations.

 

USES OF A FORMAL LETTER

A formal letter is written to:

1. make a complaint

2. request for permission

3. apply for something

4. report a problem

5. give official information

 

FEATURES OF A FORMAL LETTER

1. Writer’s Address – Written at the top right corner

2. Date – Written below the writer’s address

3. Receiver’s Address – Written on the left side

4. Salutation – e.g. Dear Sir or Dear Madam

5. Title – Shows the purpose of the letter

6. Body of the Letter – The main message (written in paragraphs)

7. Complimentary Close – e.g. Yours faithfully

8. Signature – Writer signs here

9. Full Name – Written under the signature
