WRITING: KEEPING DIARIES
A diary is a personal book where someone writes daily events, thoughts, and feelings. It is usually written every day and kept private.
PURPOSES OF WRITING A DIARY
We write a diary to:
1. record daily activities and events
2. express personal feelings and thoughts
3. remember important events in the future
4. improve writing skills
5. keep personal secrets safe
FEATURES OF A DIARY
1. Date – written at the top
2. First person – written using I, me, my
3. Past tense – used to describe events
4. Personal and informal language
5. No address or salutation
6. Honest expression of feelings
SAMPLE DAILY DIARY FOR ONE WEEK
Monday
Date: Monday, 3rd March, 2026
Today was a busy day at school. I attended all my classes and learned about adjectives in English. I felt happy because I answered a question correctly in class.
Tuesday

I woke up early and helped my mother with chores. At school, we had Mathematics revision. I found it a bit difficult, but my teacher helped me.

Today was interesting. We had Physical Education, and I played football with my friends. I was tired but very happy at the end of the day.

I was not feeling very strong today. I still went to school and listened carefully in class. After school, I rested at home and felt better.

Today was exciting because we had a quiz competition in school. My group came second. I felt proud of myself and thanked God for the day.

I stayed at home today and helped my parents clean the house. Later, I watched television and revised my notes. It was a calm day.

I went to church with my family in the morning. In the afternoon, I prepared my school bag and uniform for the new week. I felt ready for school.
