WEEK 2 – SPEECH WORK: PRONUNCIATION MONO AND BI-SYLLABLES

A syllable is a part of a word that has one vowel sound.

Example:

cat → 1 syllable

table → 2 syllables (ta–ble)

 

MONOSYLLABIC WORDS

Monosyllabic words are words that have one syllable.

Pronunciation Tip – They are pronounced in one beat or one clap.

Examples of Monosyllabic Words – cat, book, sun, pen, school, hand

Pronunciation Practice – cat (1 clap), book (1 clap), sun (1 clap),

Sentences – The cat is sleeping. I read my book. The sun is hot.

 

BISYLLABIC WORDS

Bisyllabic words are words that have two syllables.

Pronunciation Tip – They are pronounced in two beats or two claps.

Examples of Bisyllabic Words – table (ta–ble), water (wa–ter), teacher (tea–cher), happy (hap–py), open (o–pen)

Pronunciation Practice – ta–ble (2 claps), wa–ter (2 claps), hap–py (2 claps),

Sentences – The table is clean. Drink some water. She is happy today.

 

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MONOSYLLABIC AND BISYLLABIC WORDS
