CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON INTRODUCTION

In English, we use special expressions to talk about wishes (things we want) and supposition (things we imagine or think may happen).

MEANING OF WISHES

A wish is something you want to happen, especially if it is not real or not possible now.

Examples:

  • I wish I had a new bag.
  • She wishes she were taller.
  • I wish I were in Ibadan.
  • I wish I had money.

MEANING OF SUPPOSITION

Supposition means imagining or thinking about something that may happen or might be true.

Examples:

  • If I were a teacher, I would help my pupils.
  • If it rains, we will stay indoors.
  • If I were rich, I would give every beggar on the street some money.

WAYS OF EXPRESSING WISHES

1. Use “wish”

  • I wish I were rich.
  • He wishes he could travel.
  • I wish I had a bicycle.
  • She wishes she were in Lagos.
  • We wish we could play outside.
  • He wishes he were the class captain.
  • They wish they had more time to read.

2. Use “if only”

  • If only I had more time.
  • If only she were here.
  • If only I had a new phone.
  • If only she were here with us.
  • If only we could travel tomorrow.
  • If only he studied harder.
  • If only it would stop raining.

WAYS OF EXPRESSING SUPPOSITION

Use “if” to talk about possible or imagined situations:

1. Using “if” (possible situations)

  • If I study hard, I will pass.
  • If they studied hard, they would  succeed.
  • If it rains, we will stay at home.
  • If you read your books, you will pass your exams.
  • If she comes early, we will start the lesson.

2. Using “if” (imaginary situations)

  • If I had wings, I would fly.
  • If I were a doctor, I would help sick people.
  • If I had wings, I would fly in the sky.
  • If he were here, he would join us.
  • If we had more money, we would buy a car.

DIFFERENT BETWEEN WISHES AND SUPPOSITION

1. Wishes often talk about things that are not real now. While, Supposition talks about possibilities or imagination.

2. “Wish” and “if only” are used for wishes. While “If” is used for supposition.

  • Pupils form sentences using “if.”

POEM

If all the trees were one tree,

What a big tree that would be.

If all the axes were one axe,

What a big axe that would be.

If all the seas were one sea,

What a big sea that would be.

If all the men were one man,

What a big man he would be.

And if I, the big man,

Took the big axe,

And cut down the big tree,

And let it fall into the big sea.

What a big splash would be.
