CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Have you seen clothes with colourful patterns that look different from ordinary printed fabrics? Some of these beautiful designs are made by tying, folding, twisting, or stitching a piece of cloth before dipping it into dye. This method of decorating fabric is called tie and dye.
In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of tie and dye, the methods used, the materials required, and the steps involved in producing simple tie and dye designs.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF TIE AND DYE
Tie and dye is a method of decorating fabric by tying, folding, stitching, or twisting parts of the cloth before dipping it into dye. The tied parts resist the dye and create beautiful patterns when untied.
METHODS OF TIE AND DYE
Common tie and dye methods include:
1. Tying method – Parts of the fabric are tied tightly with string or rubber bands before dyeing.
2. Folding method – The fabric is folded into different shapes before dyeing.
3. Stitching method – Parts of the fabric are stitched with thread, pulled tightly, and then dyed.
4. Twisting method – The fabric is twisted into a spiral shape and tied before dyeing.
5. Crumpling method – The fabric is crumpled into a loose ball and tied before dyeing.
MATERIALS FOR TIE AND DYE
The materials needed include:
1. White cotton fabric
2. Fabric dye
3. Water
4. Plastic bucket or bowl
5. Rubber bands or strings
6. Needle and thread (for stitching method)
7. Hand gloves
8. Wooden stick or spoon for stirring
9. Apron or old clothes
LESSON 2 – HOW TO PRODUCE TIE AND DYE
1. Wash and dry the white fabric.
2. Fold, tie, twist, stitch, or crumple the fabric.
3. Prepare the dye according to the instructions.
4. Wear hand gloves before handling the dye.
5. Dip the tied fabric into the dye solution.
6. Leave it for some time so the dye is absorbed.
7. Remove the fabric and allow it to dry.
8. Untie or remove the stitches after drying.
9. Rinse the fabric and dry it again to reveal the design.
IMPORTANCE OF TIE AND DYE
Tie and dye:
1. Produces attractive fabric designs.
2. Promotes creativity.
3. Preserves Nigerian cultural heritage.
4. Can be used to make clothing and household items.
5. Creates employment and income opportunities.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. Wear hand gloves when handling dye.
2. Work in a well-ventilated area.
3. Avoid spilling dye on the skin or eyes.

SUMMARY
In this lesson, pupils learned that tie and dye is a method of decorating fabric by tying, folding, stitching, twisting, or crumpling parts of a cloth before dipping it into dye to create beautiful patterns.
Pupils identified the different methods of tie and dye, including the tying, folding, stitching, twisting, and crumpling methods. They also learned the materials used for tie and dye, such as white cotton fabric, fabric dye, rubber bands or strings, water, buckets, hand gloves, and wooden sticks.
Furthermore, pupils learned the steps involved in producing tie and dye, from preparing the fabric and dye to tying, dyeing, drying, untying, and rinsing the fabric.
Finally, pupils understood the importance of tie and dye as a means of promoting creativity, preserving Nigerian cultural heritage, producing attractive fabric designs, and creating employment opportunities.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
Step 1: Introduction – The teacher displays samples or pictures of tie and dye fabrics and asks pupils to observe the different patterns and colours. The teacher introduces the topic tie and dye.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils observe the fabrics and describe the colours and patterns they see.
Step 2: Meaning of Tie and Dye – The teacher explains that tie and dye is a method of decorating fabric by tying, folding, stitching, twisting, or crumpling parts of the cloth before dipping it into dye.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils explain the meaning of tie and dye in their own words.
Step 3: Methods and Materials – The teacher explains the common methods of tie and dye:
- Tying method
- Folding method
- Stitching method
- Twisting method
- Crumpling method
The teacher displays and explains the materials needed, such as white cotton fabric, fabric dye, rubber bands, strings, buckets, water, hand gloves, and wooden sticks.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils identify the methods and materials used for tie and dye.
Step 4: Demonstration of Tie and Dye – The teacher demonstrates the steps involved in producing tie and dye:
- Wash and dry the fabric.
- Tie, fold, stitch, twist, or crumple the fabric.
- Prepare the dye solution.
- Wear hand gloves.
