This lesson builds on that knowledge by introducing pupils to foreign musical instruments, their types, classification, and the different methods of playing them.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

People in different countries use different musical instruments to create beautiful music. Some of these instruments, such as the piano, guitar, violin, trumpet, and flute, are used in schools, churches, bands, and orchestras around the world.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of foreign musical instruments, identify different types, classify them into string, wind, percussion, and keyboard instruments, and explain the different methods of playing them.

MEANING OF FOREIGN MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Foreign musical instruments are musical instruments that originated from countries outside Nigeria. They are used to produce pleasant sounds and are played in schools, churches, bands, orchestras, and musical performances around the world.

TYPES OF FOREIGN MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Some common foreign musical instruments are:

1. Piano – A keyboard instrument played by pressing the keys.

2. Guitar – A string instrument played by plucking or strumming the strings.

3. Violin – A string instrument played with a bow.

4. Trumpet – A wind instrument played by blowing into it.

5. Saxophone – A wind instrument played by blowing through a mouthpiece.

6. Flute – A wind instrument played by blowing across an opening.

7. Clarinet – A wind instrument played by blowing through a reed.

8. Accordion – A keyboard instrument played by pressing the keys or buttons while opening and closing the bellows.

9. Harp – A string instrument played by plucking the strings.

10. Drum Set – A percussion instrument played by striking the drums and cymbals with drumsticks.

CLASSIFICATION OF FOREIGN MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Foreign musical instruments can be grouped into four main classes:

1. String Instruments – These instruments produce sound when their strings are plucked, bowed, or struck.

2. Wind Instruments – These instruments produce sound when air is blown into or through them.

SUMMARY
