CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Everyone makes mistakes and may sometimes do things that are wrong. When someone deserves punishment but is treated with kindness or forgiveness, it can be an example of mercy.

God is merciful to human beings. He forgives people when they sincerely repent and turn away from wrongdoing.

God also wants us to show mercy to other people by forgiving, helping and showing kindness to those who need it.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF MERCY

Mercy means showing kindness, forgiveness or compassion to someone who has done wrong or is in need.

Mercy involves not being harsh towards someone who deserves punishment and showing concern for someone who is suffering or in difficulty.

The Bible teaches that God is merciful and compassionate. Psalm 103:8 says that the Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and rich in love.

GOD’S MERCY ON US

God shows mercy to human beings in many ways. He does not treat us according to our wrong actions when we sincerely repent and seek His forgiveness.

God’s mercy includes:

1. Forgiving our sins: God forgives people who sincerely repent and ask for forgiveness.

2. Giving us another opportunity: God gives people opportunities to correct their mistakes and live better lives.

3. Protecting us: God protects us from dangers and difficulties according to His will.

4. Providing for us: God provides our needs and cares for us.

5. Answering prayers: God listens to our prayers and responds according to His will.

6. Showing patience: God gives people time to repent and change from their wrong ways.

A good example is the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11–32. The father welcomed his son back after he returned and admitted his wrongdoing. This shows forgiveness, compassion and mercy.

LESSON 2 – WAYS GOD SHOWS US MERCY

God shows us mercy by:

1. Forgiving our sins.

2. Giving us opportunities to change.

3. Protecting us from danger.

4. Providing our needs.

5. Showing patience towards us.

6. Listening to our prayers.

7. Giving us hope and another chance to do what is right.

We should appreciate God’s mercy by obeying His Word and avoiding deliberate wrongdoing.

LESSON 3 – THE NEED TO BE MERCIFUL TO OTHERS

Since God is merciful to us, we should also show mercy to others.

We can show mercy by:

1. Forgiving people who offend us.

2. Helping people who are in need.

3. Showing kindness to people who are suffering.

4. Being patient with others.

5. Avoiding unnecessary punishment or harsh treatment.

6. Helping people who make genuine mistakes.

7. Visiting or comforting people who are sick or troubled.

8. Sharing what we have with people who need help.

Jesus taught His followers to be merciful. In Luke 6:36, He said, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” Showing mercy promotes peace, love, forgiveness and good relationships among people.

SUMMARY

Pupils learned that mercy means showing kindness, forgiveness and compassion to people who are in need or have done wrong. God is merciful to us because He forgives our sins, protects us, provides for us and gives us opportunities to change.
