ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Pupils have learned that God provides for our needs through His creation, other people, work and other means.

This lesson builds on that knowledge by teaching pupils that people should also work responsibly and use the abilities God has given them.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Work is an important part of human life. People work at home, in schools, farms, offices, markets, hospitals, workshops and many other places.

God wants people to use their abilities and strength to work and do useful things. Work helps people meet their needs and serve others.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of work, different types of work and reasons why people should work.

MEANING OF WORK

Work is an activity that involves physical or mental effort to do or produce something useful. Work can also be a job or occupation through which a person earns a living.

The Bible teaches that God gave human beings work to do. In Genesis 2:15, God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

Work is therefore not something people should be ashamed of. People should be willing to work honestly and responsibly.

TYPES OF WORK

There are different types of work people do in society. Examples include:

1. Farming: Growing crops and rearing animals.

2. Teaching: Helping people to gain knowledge and skills.

3. Trading: Buying and selling goods and services.

4. Carpentry: Making and repairing wooden items.

5. Sewing: Making clothes and other fabric items.

6. Driving: Transporting people or goods from one place to another.

7. Medicine: Caring for sick and injured people.

8. Engineering: Designing, building and maintaining machines and structures.

9. Catering: Preparing and serving food.

10. Hairdressing: Cutting, styling and caring for people’s hair.

11. Welding: Joining metal parts together.

12. Building: Constructing houses and other structures.

Both physical and mental work are useful. People should respect honest work, whether it is done with the hands or with the mind.

WHY GOD WANTS US TO WORK

God wants us to work because He has given human beings abilities, strength, talents and skills.

Work helps people to:

1. Take care of their needs.

2. Use their talents and abilities.

3. Help other people.

4. Develop useful skills.

5. Contribute to the development of society.

6. Live responsibly.

7. Earn a living honestly.

The Bible teaches that people should not be lazy but should work responsibly. 2 Thessalonians 3:10–13 teaches the importance of responsible work. Genesis 2:15 also shows that work was given to human beings from the beginning.

REASONS WHY PEOPLE SHOULD WORK

People should work for several reasons:

1. To earn a living: Work helps people earn money to meet their needs.

2. To provide for the family: Parents and guardians work to provide food, clothing, shelter and other needs.

3. To use their talents: Work allows people to use and develop their abilities.

4. To help others: Many workers provide useful goods and services to people.

5. To contribute to society: Workers help their communities and the country to develop.

6. To become responsible: Work teaches people discipline and responsibility.

7. To avoid laziness: People should spend their time doing useful activities.

8. To live honestly: Honest work helps people provide for themselves without stealing or depending unnecessarily on others.

We should work honestly, diligently and responsibly. We should also respect people who do different kinds of useful work.

SUMMARY
