ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

This lesson builds on that knowledge by introducing the concept of governance and the qualities of good governance.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Every school has a head teacher, teachers, and class prefects who help to guide others and ensure that rules are followed. Communities and countries also have leaders who make decisions for the good of the people. When these leaders are honest, fair, responsible, and obey the law, they practise good governance.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the definition of governance, the meaning of good governance, and how they can demonstrate good governance in the classroom, at home, and in their community.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF GOOD GOVERNANCE

Good governance is the fair, honest, transparent, responsible, and accountable way of managing the affairs of a community, school, organization, or country for the benefit of everyone.

Good governance promotes peace, justice, development, and respect for the rights of all people.

EXAMPLES OF GOOD GOVERNANCE

1. A class prefect who treats all pupils fairly.

2. A head teacher who listens to teachers and pupils before making decisions.

3. Community leaders who use public money honestly.

4. Citizens who obey laws and participate in community development.

CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD GOVERNANCE

Good governance includes:

1. Honesty – Telling the truth and doing the right thing.

2. Fairness – Treating everyone equally without favouring anyone.

3. Accountability – Being ready to explain your actions and accept responsibility for them.

4. Transparency – Being open and not hiding important information.

5. Responsibility – Doing your duties well and taking care of what is entrusted to you.

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that governance is the process of leading, directing, and managing the affairs of a group, school, community, or country.

They also learned that good governance means leading and managing people with honesty, fairness, responsibility, transparency, accountability, participation, respect for the rule of law, and respect for the rights of others.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction – The teacher asks pupils to mention the leaders in their school (head teacher, class teacher, class prefect) and community. The teacher discusses what these leaders do before introducing the topic Governance.
