CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Every country needs good leaders to make decisions and manage its affairs. In Nigeria, leaders are chosen through elections, and they are expected to use the country’s money and resources wisely for the benefit of everyone. This is called governance.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about democratic governance, economic and financial governance, and the features of good governance that help a country develop peacefully and fairly.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF GOVERNANCE

Governance is the way leaders direct, manage, and make decisions for a group, community, organisation, or country.

TYPES OF GOVERNANCE

1. Democratic Governance

Democratic governance is a system in which the people choose their leaders through free and fair elections.

Features of Democratic Governance

In democratic governance,

  • People vote to choose their leaders.
  • Everyone has equal rights
  • Leaders obey the law.
  • Citizens participate in decision-making.
  • People’s opinions are respected.

2. Economic and Financial Governance

Economic and financial governance is the proper management and use of a country’s money, resources, and property for the benefit of everyone.

Examples of Economic and Financial Governance

  • Spending public money wisely.
  • Preventing corruption.
  • Collecting taxes responsibly.
  • Providing public services such as schools and hospitals.
  • Managing national resources honestly.

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that governance is the process of leading and managing the affairs of a group, community, or country.
