CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Plants are very important to humans and animals because they provide food, medicine, oxygen, and shelter. For plants to grow healthy and produce good yields, they need well-prepared soil.

Before planting seeds or seedlings, the soil must be cleared, loosened, and made suitable for plant growth. This process is called soil preparation.

Farmers follow certain guidelines such as proper planting, watering, weeding, and protecting crops from pests to ensure that plants grow well.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of soil preparation, the steps involved in preparing soil, and the guidelines for growing healthy plants.

MEANING OF SOIL PREPARATION

Soil preparation is the process of making the soil ready for planting crops.

LESSON 2 – STEPS IN SOIL PREPARATION

1. Clearing the land

2. Removing weeds and stones

3. Tilling or loosening the soil

4. Making ridges or beds

5. Adding manure or fertilizer if necessary

LESSON 2 – GUIDELINES FOR GROWING PLANTS

1. Use good seeds or healthy seedlings.

2. Prepare the soil properly.

3. Plant at the correct depth.

4. Water the plants regularly.

5. Remove weeds around the plants.

6. Protect plants from pests and animals.

7. Apply manure or fertilizer when necessary.

IMPORTANCE OF SOIL PREPARATION

1. It helps seeds germinate well.

2. It improves plant growth.

3. It increases crop yield.

4. It makes it easier for roots to spread.

5. It reduces weed growth.

LESSON 3 – PRACTICE EXERCISE/ASSIGNMENT/TEST QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

A. Answer the Questions

1. What is soil preparation?

2. Why is soil preparation important?

3. Mention three steps involved in soil preparation.

4. State two guidelines for growing plants.

SUMMARY

Plants need well-prepared soil to grow properly. Before planting, the soil must be cleared, loosened, and made ready to support healthy plant growth.

Pupils learned that soil preparation is the process of making soil ready for planting. They also learned the steps involved in soil preparation and the guidelines for growing healthy plants.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. The teacher displays farm tools such as hoe, cutlass, rake, and watering can.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils identify and name the tools.

2. The teacher asks pupils what plants need to grow well.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils respond by mentioning soil, water, sunlight, and air.

3. The teacher explains the meaning of soil preparation.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils listen attentively.

4. The teacher introduces the topic: Growing of Plants: Soil Preparation and Guidelines.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils repeat the topic.

5. The teacher explains the steps involved in soil preparation:

  • Clearing the land
  • Removing weeds and stones
  • Loosening the soil
  • Making ridges or beds
  • Adding manure or fertilizer

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils mention the steps after the teacher.

6. The teacher demonstrates how to loosen soil and remove weeds using simple tools.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils observe and participate where possible.

7. The teacher explains the guidelines for growing plants, such as proper planting, watering, and weeding.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils listen and ask questions.

8. The teacher discusses the importance of soil preparation in helping plants grow well.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils give examples from home gardens or farms.

9. The teacher writes key points on the board for pupils to copy.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils copy into their notebooks.

10. The teacher summarizes the lesson by revising soil preparation steps and plant-growing guidelines.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils participate in the summary and answer oral questions.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
