MEANING OF ECONOMIC HISTORY

Economic history is the study of how a country or people produced, distributed, and used goods and services in the past.

 

RELEVANCE OF ECONOMIC HISTORY TO NIGERIA’S DEVELOPMENT

Economic history helps Nigeria to:

1. Understand how the economy started (agriculture, trade, mining, etc.).

2. Learn from past mistakes (like overdependence on oil).

3. Plan better for the future.

4. Know the importance of diversification (agriculture, technology, manufacturing).

5. Improve policies for growth and development.

For example, Nigeria once depended mainly on agriculture (cocoa, groundnut, palm oil) before crude oil became the major source of income.

 

MEANING OF CRUDE OIL

Crude oil is a natural liquid found deep underground. It is a thick, dark liquid made from plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. It is also called petroleum.

Crude oil is used to produce: Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene, Cooking gas, Plastics, etc.

 

PLACES WHERE CRUDE OIL IS FOUND IN NIGERIA

Crude oil is mainly found in the Niger Delta region. Crude oil was first discovered in commercial quantities in Nigeria at Oloibiri in present-day Bayelsa State (formerly Rivers State) on January 15, 1956, by Shell-BP.

Major states include: Rivers State, Delta State, Bayelsa State, Akwa Ibom State, Edo State, Ondo State, Imo State, Abia State
