PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, the students should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. explain pregnancy.

2. describe symptoms of pregnancy and where to get help.

3. explain the growth of foetus (from stage by stage till birth)

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The students can identify and explain what is pregnancy.

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of charts showing a pregnant woman or girl.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Fertilization is the joining together of the male’s sperm to the female’s ovum (eggs). That’s, the union of male’s sperms and female’s eggs. When a egg is fertile, a baby starts growing.

 

MEANING OF PREGNANCY 

Pregnancy is the condition or period of being pregnant.

 

 

That’s, pregnancy is the time period which a baby develops inside a woman.

 

SYMPTOMS OF PREGNANCY 

Symptoms of pregnancy are vary, these are the common symptoms –

1. Missed period

2. Morning sickness with or without vomiting

3. Breast changes

4. Fatigue and tiredness

5. Headache

6. Constipation

7. Faintness and dizziness

8. Just “Feeling” Pregnant

9. Raised basal body temperature

 

LESSON 2 – WHERE TO GET HELP DURING PREGNANCY? 

1. Obstetricians

Doctors who specialize in pregnancy, childbirth and a woman’s reproductive system.

 

2. Obstetricians/Gynecologists 

Doctors who specialize in pregnancy and childbirth, as well as women’s health care. They are also called OB/GYNs

 

3. Family Practitioners 

Doctors who provide a range of services for patients of all ages (sometimes, this includes obstetrical care) instead of specializing in one area

 

4. Certified Nurse Midwife 

An advanced practice nurse specializing in women’s health care needs, including prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care for pregnancies without problems

 

THE GROWTH OF THE FOETUS TILL BIRTH 

After fertilization, the egg that will become your baby rapidly divides into many cells. By the eighth week of pregnancy, the baby change names from an embryo to a fetus.

There are about 40 weeks to a typical pregnancy.

 

STAGES OF PREGNANCY

  • 9 weeks – fetal stage begins
  • 12 weeks – sex organs differentiate
  • 16 weeks – eyes, fingers, toes, nails and hair are develop.

 

 

  • 20 weeks – hearing begins
  • 24 weeks – lungs begin to develop
  • 28 weeks – brain begins to grow rapidly
  • 32 weeks – bones are fully developed
  • 36 weeks – muscles are fully developed
  • 40 weeks – full baby development. At this point, the baby’s position may have changed to prepare for birth.

 

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST)

 

ASSIGNMENT

1. The meaning of force.

3. Differentiate between contact and non contact force.

4. state the differences between magnetic and gravitational forces.

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the students some questions;

2. Explains the meaning and symptoms of pregnancy.

3. Explains the growth of foetus from fertilization still birth.
