CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Marriage is an important part of family life. Different cultures have different customs and practices about marriage.

In some communities, choosing a marriage partner involves getting to know the person, seeking advice from parents or elders, making enquiries, writing or visiting the family, and meeting with both families.

Good values such as love, respect, honesty, good character, responsibility, and understanding are important when choosing a marriage partner.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about marriage customs and practices, steps in selecting marriage partners, the purpose of writing or visiting, and the values needed when selecting a marriage partner.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF MARRIAGE CUSTOMS

Marriage customs are the accepted ways, beliefs, and practices followed by a particular society when choosing marriage partners and preparing for or celebrating marriage.

Marriage customs differ from one culture to another. However, good marriage practices should promote love, respect, responsibility, cooperation, and peaceful family life.

STEPS IN SELECTING MARRIAGE PARTNERS

In many communities, selecting a marriage partner may involve the following steps:

1. Knowing and understanding the person – The individuals get to know one another and learn about their character and values.

2. Seeking family guidance – Parents, guardians, or trusted elders may provide advice.

3. Making enquiries – The families may find out about the background, character, and family of the prospective partner.

4. Writing or visiting – The prospective partner or their family may formally communicate their interest through a letter, message, or visit.

5. Family meeting – Both families may meet to discuss the proposed marriage.

6. Agreement and preparation – When both parties freely agree, the families make appropriate preparations according to their customs and religion.

7. Marriage ceremony – The marriage is formally celebrated according to the relevant cultural, religious, and legal requirements.

Note: Marriage should involve the free and informed agreement of the people getting married and must follow applicable laws. Children should not be forced or pressured into marriage.
