This lesson builds on that knowledge by helping pupils understand the roles families play, how family members provide useful advice, the consequences of fulfilling family responsibilities, and unhealthy marriage practices.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Every family member has a role to play in making the family peaceful, happy, and successful. Parents provide care and guidance, while children also have responsibilities such as helping with household duties and respecting family members.

Families also give useful advice to their members, especially children, about education, good behaviour, safety, friendships, and making responsible decisions.

However, some practices in marriage and family life can be harmful. These include forced marriage, child marriage, deception, and domestic violence.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about the roles played by families, how families provide useful advice, the consequences of performing family roles, and unhealthy marriage practices.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF FAMILY ROLES

Family roles are the duties and responsibilities performed by different members of a family to help the family live peacefully and successfully.

Every family member has a role to play. Parents, children, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and other relatives can contribute to the wellbeing of the family.

ROLES OF FAMILIES

Families perform many important roles, including:

1. Providing basic needs – Families provide food, clothing, shelter, education, and healthcare.

2. Providing useful advice – Parents and older family members guide younger members and help them make good decisions.

3. Teaching good values – Families teach children honesty, respect, kindness, responsibility, and discipline.

SUMMARY
