This lesson builds on that knowledge by helping pupils understand who parents are, their duties towards their children, and the qualities of responsible parents.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Parents are important members of the family. They care for, protect, guide, and support their children.

Parents provide basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, education, and healthcare. They also teach children good behaviour and values such as respect, honesty, kindness, and responsibility.

Responsible parenthood means taking good care of children and performing parental duties properly. Responsible parents show love, provide guidance, protect their children, support their education, and help them grow into responsible members of society.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about who parents are, the duties of parents, and the characteristics of responsible parenthood.

LESSON 1 – WHO ARE PARENTS?

Parents are the adults who care for, guide, protect, and support their children. They may be a child’s mother, father, or legal guardian.

Parents have an important role in helping children grow into responsible and useful members of society.

DUTIES OF PARENTS

Parents have many duties towards their children, including:

1. Providing basic needs – They provide food, clothing, shelter, and other necessities.

2. Providing education – They support children’s education and provide necessary learning materials.

3. Providing healthcare – They ensure that children receive appropriate medical care when needed.

4. Protection – They protect children from danger, abuse, and harmful situations.

LESSON 2 – MEANING OF RESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD

Responsible parenthood means performing the duties of caring for, protecting, guiding, and supporting children properly and making responsible decisions for the wellbeing of the family.

Responsible parents consider the needs, safety, education, health, and future development of their children.

CHARACTERISTICS OF RESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD

A responsible parent should demonstrate the following qualities:

1. Love and Care – Responsible parents show genuine love, care, and concern for their children.

2. Responsibility – They take their duties towards their children seriously.

3. Patience – They remain patient when teaching and correcting their children.

4. Good Communication – They listen to their children and communicate with them respectfully.

5. Protection – They take reasonable steps to keep their children safe from harm.

6. Good Example – They demonstrate good behaviour because children often learn by observing adults.

7. Support for Education – They encourage children to learn and take their education seriously.

8. Provision of Basic Needs – They make reasonable efforts to provide food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, and other essential needs.

SUMMARY
