CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Many computers can work together by connecting to one another. This connection allows them to share files, printers, Internet access, and information. This connection is called networking.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of networking, the types of computer networks, their uses, and the importance of networking in schools, homes, offices, banks, hospitals, and other organisations.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF NETWORKING

Networking is the process of connecting two or more computers and other devices together so that they can communicate and share information, files, printers, Internet connection, and other resources.

A group of connected computers is called a computer network.

TYPES OF NETWORKING

1. Local Area Network (LAN)

A Local Area Network (LAN) connects computers within a small area such as:

  • A classroom
  • A school
  • An office
  • A home

2. Wide Area Network (WAN)

A Wide Area Network (WAN) connects computers over a very large area, such as:

  • Different cities
  • Different states
  • Different countries

The Internet is the largest example of a WAN.

3. Wireless Network (Wi-Fi)

A Wireless Network connects computers and devices without cables by using radio signals.

Examples include:

  • Home Wi-Fi
  • School Wi-Fi
  • Office Wi-Fi

USES OF NETWORKING

Networking is used to:

1. Share files and documents.

2. Share printers and other devices.

3. Share Internet connection.

4. Communicate through emails and messages.

5. Support online learning.

6. Store and access shared information.

7. Work together on projects.

8. Transfer data quickly between computers.

LESSON 2 – IMPORTANCE OF NETWORKING

Networking helps to:

1. Save time.

2. Reduce the cost of sharing devices.

3. Improve communication.

4. Make teamwork easier.

5. Share information quickly.

6. Increase productivity.

7. Support online education.

8. Improve business operations.

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that networking is the process of connecting two or more computers and other devices so that they can communicate and share information, files, printers, Internet connection, and other resources.

They learned the types of networking, which include:

  • Local Area Network (LAN) – connects computers within a small area such as a school, office, or home.
  • Wide Area Network (WAN) – connects computers over a large geographical area such as cities, countries, or continents. The Internet is the largest example of a WAN.
  • Wireless Network (Wi-Fi) – connects computers and devices without using cables.

Pupils also learned the uses of networking, such as sharing files, printers, Internet connection, communicating with others, supporting online learning, and transferring data quickly.

Finally, pupils learned the importance of networking, including saving time, reducing costs, improving communication, promoting teamwork, increasing productivity, and making it easier to share information and resources. They also understood the importance of following basic network safety rules, such as using strong passwords and avoiding unknown files.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction – The teacher displays two or more connected computers (or pictures of connected computers) and asks pupils how the computers can share information with one another. The teacher introduces the concept of networking.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils observe the connected computers and suggest how they can communicate or share files.

Step 2: Meaning of Networking – The teacher explains that networking is the process of connecting two or more computers and other devices to communicate and share files, printers, Internet connection, and other resources.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils explain the meaning of networking in their own words.

Step 3: Types of Networking – The teacher explains the three common types of networking:

  • Local Area Network (LAN)
  • Wide Area Network (WAN)
  • Wireless Network (Wi-Fi)

The teacher uses charts or pictures to illustrate each type.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils identify the different types of networking and mention examples of where they are used.

Step 4: Uses of Networking – The teacher discusses the uses of networking, including:

  • Sharing files
  • Sharing printers
  • Sharing Internet connection
  • Communication
  • Online learning
  • Teamwork
  • Data transfer

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils mention places where networking is used and explain its uses.

Step 5: Importance of Networking – The teacher explains the importance of networking, including:

  • Saving time
  • Reducing costs
  • Improving communication
  • Sharing information quickly
  • Supporting businesses and education
  • Increasing productivity

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils discuss why networking is useful in schools, homes, and offices.

Step 6: Group Activity – The teacher divides the class into four groups and assigns the following activities:

  • Group 1: Explain the meaning of networking and state its importance.
  • Group 2: Identify and explain the three types of networking with examples.
  • Group 3: List and explain five uses of networking.
  • Group 4: Identify places where networking is used and discuss simple network safety rules.

Each group presents its work before the class.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils discuss, complete the assigned tasks, and present their findings.

Step 7: Lesson Summary – The teacher reviews the meaning, types, uses, and importance of networking.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils answer oral questions and summarise the lesson.

Step 8: Evaluation – The teacher asks oral and written questions to assess pupils’ understanding of networking, its types, uses, and importance.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils answer the evaluation questions and participate actively in the lesson.
