CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Have you ever seen large stones on roadsides, hills, or construction sites? These stones are called rocks. Rocks are found everywhere in nature and form part of the earth’s surface. They come in different shapes, sizes, colours, and textures.
Rocks are useful to humans in many ways. Some are used for building houses, roads, and bridges, while others serve as tourist attractions. Nigeria is blessed with many famous landmark rocks that attract visitors from different parts of the world.
In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning and classification of rocks, their uses, and some major landmark rocks found in Nigeria.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF ROCKS
Rocks are naturally occurring solid materials that make up the earth’s crust. They are made up of one or more minerals and are found in different shapes, sizes, colours, and textures.
Rocks can be found on hills, mountains, riverbanks, roadsides, and beneath the ground.
CLASSIFICATION OF ROCKS
Rocks are classified into three main groups based on how they are formed:
1. Igneous Rocks
Igneous rocks are formed when hot molten magma or lava cools and hardens.
Examples:
- Granite
- Basalt
- Pumice
Characteristics:
- Very hard and strong.
- Do not contain fossils.
- Usually have a crystalline appearance.
2. Sedimentary Rocks
Sedimentary rocks are formed from layers of sediments such as sand, mud, and remains of plants and animals that are compressed over time.
Examples:
- Sandstone
- Limestone
- Shale
Characteristics:
- Usually arranged in layers.
- May contain fossils.
- Generally softer than igneous rocks.
3. Metamorphic Rocks
Metamorphic rocks are formed when existing rocks are changed by heat and pressure inside the earth.
Examples:
- Marble
- Slate
- Quartzite
Characteristics:
- Very hard and compact.
- Have changed from one type of rock to another.
- Often have attractive patterns.
Rocks are natural solid materials that make up the earth’s crust. They are classified into three main types: Igneous rocks – formed from cooled magma or lava, Sedimentary rocks – formed from compressed sediments and Metamorphic rocks – formed when existing rocks are changed by heat and pressure.
These rocks differ in their formation, appearance, and characteristics.
LESSON 2 – IMPORTANT USES OF ROCKS
Rocks are valuable natural resources that are useful to human beings in many ways.
1. Building Construction – Rocks are used for building houses, schools, bridges, and other structures.
2. Road Construction – Crushed rocks are used in the construction of roads and highways.
3. Production of Cement – Some rocks, such as limestone, are used in making cement.
4. Decoration and Beautification – Rocks such as marble are used for decorating buildings, floors, and monuments.
5. Making Statues and Monuments – Rocks are used in carving statues, sculptures, and monuments.
6. Source of Minerals – Many minerals and valuable materials are obtained from rocks.
7. Tourist Attractions – Some large and beautiful rocks attract tourists and visitors.
8. Jewelry and Ornaments – Precious stones found in rocks are used to make jewelry and ornaments.
9. Protection Against Erosion – Rocks are used to control soil erosion and protect riverbanks.
10. Agriculture – Weathered rocks contribute to the formation of soil used for farming.
LESSON 3 – MAJOR LANDMARK ROCKS IN NIGERIA
Nigeria is blessed with many famous rocks that serve as important tourist attractions and historical landmarks.
1. Zuma Rock
- Located along the Abuja–Kaduna Road.
- One of the most famous rocks in Nigeria.
- Known as the “Gateway to Abuja.”
2. Olumo Rock
- Located in Abeokuta.

- A major tourist attraction.
3. Aso Rock
- Located in Abuja.
- A prominent rock close to important government buildings.
- One of the symbols of Nigeria’s capital city.
4. Wase Rock
- Located in Plateau State.
- A striking volcanic rock formation.
- Popular among tourists and researchers.

- One of the highest rock formations in Nigeria.
- Suitable for sightseeing and mountain climbing.
6. Idanre Hills
- Famous for its beautiful rocky landscape.
