LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

1. Define the excretory system.

2. Identify the organs involved in the excretory system.

3. State the functions of the excretory organs.

4. Explain the importance of excretion in the body.

5. Appreciate the need to keep the body healthy.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Pupils have previously learned about the human body, personal hygiene, healthy living, and body systems. They learned that the body needs food, water, and air to stay alive and healthy.

This lesson builds on that knowledge by helping pupils understand that the body also needs to remove waste products and excess substances. The organs responsible for removing these wastes form the excretory system, which helps keep the body clean and healthy.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Chart of the human excretory system

2. Diagram of the kidney

3. Pictures of excretory organs

4. Flash ca rds

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Every day, our bodies carry out many activities such as eating, breathing, moving, and growing. During these activities, waste materials are produced inside the body. If these waste materials are not removed, they can accumulate and make the body unhealthy.

Just as we dispose of waste from our homes to keep the environment clean, the human body also has a special system that removes waste products and excess substances. This system is called the excretory system.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of the excretory system, identify the organs involved in excretion, and understand the important functions these organs perform in keeping the body healthy and free from harmful waste products.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM

The excretory system is the body system responsible for removing waste products and excess substances from the body.

The process of removing waste materials from the body is called excretion.

Waste products are substances that the body no longer needs and must remove to remain healthy.

Examples of Waste Products Removed by the Body

  • Urine
  • Sweat
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Excess water
  • Excess salts

IMPORTANCE OF THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM

1. It removes harmful waste products from the body.

2. It keeps the body healthy and clean internally.

3. It prevents the build-up of toxic substances.

4. It helps maintain the balance of water and salts in the body.

The excretory system is the body system that removes waste products and excess substances from the body. The process of removing these wastes is called excretion, and it is important for maintaining good health and proper body function.

LESSON 2 – ORGANS INVOLVED IN THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

The excretory system is made up of organs that help remove waste products from the body to keep it healthy.

1. Kidneys

Function:

  • Kidneys filter waste products from the blood.
  • Kidneys produce urine.
  • Kidneys help regulate the amount of water and salts in the body.

2. Skin

Function:

  • Skin removes excess water, salts, and small amounts of waste through sweat.
  • Skin helps regulate body temperature.

3. Lungs

Function: Lungsremove carbon dioxide and water vapour from the body during breathing.

4. Liver

Function:

  • Liver breaks down harmful substances in the body.
  • Liver helps remove waste products produced during digestion and metabolism.

5. Urinary Bladder

Function: Urinary bladder stores urine before it is passed out of the body.

The main organs involved in the excretory system are the kidneys, skin, lungs, liver, and urinary bladder. These organs work together to remove waste products such as urine, sweat, carbon dioxide, excess water, and harmful substances, helping to keep the body healthy and functioning properly.

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that the excretory system is the body system responsible for removing waste products and excess substances from the body.

They also learned that the process of removing waste products from the body is called excretion.

Pupils identified the major organs involved in the excretory system, which include:

  • Kidneys – filter waste from the blood and produce urine.
  • Skin – removes excess water and salts through sweat.
  • Lungs – remove carbon dioxide and water vapour during breathing.
  • Liver – breaks down harmful substances and helps remove waste products.
  • Urinary Bladder – stores urine before it is passed out of the body.

Furthermore, pupils learned that the excretory system is important because it:

  • Removes harmful waste products.
  • Maintains a healthy internal environment.
  • Prevents the accumulation of toxic substances.
  • Helps regulate water and salt balance in the body.

The lesson helped pupils understand that the excretory organs work together to keep the body clean, healthy, and functioning properly.
