This lesson builds on that knowledge by teaching pupils the meaning of role play, the roles of actors and actresses, and how to participate in simple role-playing activities.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Every day, people perform different roles at home, in school, and in the community. A teacher teaches pupils, a doctor treats patients, a police officer directs traffic, and a shopkeeper sells goods. We can pretend to be these people through role play.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of role play, the difference between an actor and an actress, and participate in simple role-playing activities to improve their confidence, communication skills, and creativity.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF ROLE PLAY

Role play is the act of pretending to be another person or character in order to act out a situation or tell a story.

Role play helps pupils learn through acting and improves communication and confidence.

MEANING OF AN ACTOR AND AN ACTRESS

• Actor: A man or boy who performs a role in a drama, film, or stage play.

• Actress: A woman or girl who performs a role in a drama, film, or stage play.

IMPORTANCE OF ROLE PLAY

Role play helps pupils to:

1. Build self-confidence.

2. Improve speaking and communication skills.

3. Develop creativity and imagination.

4. Learn good morals and values.

5. Work together as a team.

6. Express feelings and ideas clearly.

7. Entertain and educate people.

LESSON 2 – QUALITIES OF A GOOD ACTOR OR ACTRESS

A good actor or actress should:

1. Speak clearly.

2. Be confident.

3. Memorise lines.

4. Show appropriate facial expressions.

5. Use body movements and gestures.

6. Cooperate with other performers.

7. Act naturally.

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that role play is the act of pretending to be another person or character to act out a situation or tell a story.

Pupils also learned that an actor is a male performer, while an actress is a female performer in a drama, film, or stage play.
