MEANING OF DRUG TRAFFICKING 

Drug trafficking is an illicit trade that involves the cultivation, manufacture, distribution and sale of substances which are subject to drug prohibition laws.

Drug trafficking is prohibited by law globally.

 

REASONS FOR TRAFFICKING IN DRUGS 

  • Poverty
  • Ignorance
  • Greed
  • Unemployment
  • Negative peer pressure
  • Lack of self discipline
  • Demand and supply of drugs
  • Easy money, fame and power
  • Peer or group influence, etc.

 

DANGERS OF DRUG TRAFFICKING 

  • Bad image for the country
  • Imprisonment
  • Death penalty in some cases
  • Affects national security
  • Negative impact on the economy

MEANING OF DRUG/SUBSTANCE ABUSE 

Drugs are substances (liquid, solid or gas) that are used to cure or prevent illness.

A drug is a substance that affects the operations of the body. If we take drugs during sickness, they make us feel better, when we take them according to doctor’s prescription.

 

Drug abuse is the wrong (misuse) of drugs to get self drive.

Drugs used this ways are not prescribed by doctors, nurses or pharmacists.

 

There are substances that are regular as drugs. Substances are in solid, liquid and gas form.

For example – coffee, palm wine, alcohol, indian hemp, tobacco, codeine, etc. and including poison.

These substances are very dangerous if abuse because they affect the body and mind.

 

FORMS OF DRUG ABUSE 

Drugs can be naturally or chemical in nature.

Synthetic drugs are man made drugs and natural drugs are found in nature.

 

A. NATURALLY OCCURRING DRUGS

Naturally occurring drugs e.g. honey, salt, alcohol, caffeine in Kolanut, bitter leaf, palm wine, etc.

These drugs occur in nature. They are products of plants or animals.

 

B. SYNTHETIC DRUGS

These are produced by mixing chemical compounds together, e.g. cough syrup, panadol, etc.

These are usually produced by pharmaceutical companies under licence.

 

CONSEQUENCES OF DRUG ABUSE 

A. ON INDIVIDUAL 

  • Respiratory tract infection
  • Blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Weight loss
  • Blindness
  • Mental illness
  • Premature ageing
  • Death, etc.

 

B. ON THE COMMUNITY AND THE NATION

  • Bad behaviour
  • Poor performance in school
  • Violence
  • Truancy
  • Prostitution
  • Robbery
  • Murder
  • Financial problems
  • HIV infection

 

C. INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY 

  • Threat of international relations
  • Disagreement between nations

WAYS OF DISCOURAGING DRUG ABUSE 

  • Choosing good friends
