CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Road accidents can cause injuries, loss of lives, and damage to vehicles and property. However, many road accidents can be prevented when road users obey traffic rules and behave safely on the road.

When an accident occurs, police officers, road safety officers, fire service officers, and medical workers may come to help the victims and make the area safe.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about ways of preventing road accidents and the duties of security and emergency agents at accident scenes.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF PREVENTING ROAD ACCIDENTS

Preventing road accidents means taking steps to stop or reduce accidents from happening on the road.

Everyone who uses the road has a role to play in preventing accidents.

WAYS OF PREVENTING ROAD ACCIDENTS

Road accidents can be prevented by:

1. Obeying traffic rules and road signs.

2. Avoiding speeding.

3. Driving carefully and paying attention to the road.

4. Avoiding the use of phones while driving.

5. Avoiding alcohol or drugs before driving.

6. Maintaining vehicles properly.

7. Wearing seat belts when travelling in a vehicle.

8. Wearing helmets when riding motorcycles or bicycles.

9. Crossing the road carefully at a safe place.

10. Avoiding playing on the road.

11. Avoiding overloading vehicles.

12. Using traffic lights and pedestrian crossings correctly.

LESSON 2 – SECURITY AGENTS AT ACCIDENT SCENES

Different security and emergency agents may come to an accident scene to help victims, control traffic, and maintain safety.

• Help protect victims and property.

2. Road Safety Officers

Road safety officers:

SUMMARY
