CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Nigeria has many ethnic groups with different languages, customs, traditions, foods, dressing styles, music, beliefs, and ways of life. However, Nigerians also come into contact with people and cultures from other countries through education, travel, television, films, music, social media, the internet, and technology.

These foreign cultures can influence the way Nigerians dress, eat, speak, communicate, entertain themselves, and behave. Some of these influences can be useful, while others may negatively affect Nigerian values and cultural practices.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about the meaning of foreign culture, some foreign cultures affecting Nigerian values and cultures, and the advantages and disadvantages of foreign cultures on Nigerian culture.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF FOREIGN CULTURE

Foreign culture refers to the beliefs, customs, traditions, ways of dressing, food, language, music, entertainment, and ways of life that originate from another country or society.

Foreign cultures can influence Nigerian culture through education, travel, television, films, music, social media, the internet, technology, and interaction with foreigners.

EXAMPLES OF FOREIGN CULTURES AFFECTING NIGERIAN CULTURE

Some examples include:

1. Foreign dressing styles – Some young people increasingly wear clothing styles from other countries.

2. Foreign music and entertainment – Foreign songs, films, and television programmes influence people’s tastes and behaviour.

4. Foreign food habits – Fast foods and other foreign dishes have become popular among many Nigerians.
