CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Nigeria has different levels of government, and each level has its own duties. The State Government is responsible for managing the affairs of each state. It builds roads, supports schools and hospitals, provides security, and promotes development within the state. Every state also has a motto that reflects its values and goals.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of State Government, the officials in charge, the state motto, and the importance of the State Government.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF STATE GOVERNMENT

State Government is the second level of government in Nigeria. It is responsible for governing a state and providing services to the people living in that state.

Each state in Nigeria has its own government.

OFFICIALS IN CHARGE OF THE STATE GOVERNMENT

The main officials in charge of the State Government are:

1. Governor – The head of the State Government.

2. Deputy Governor – Assists the Governor.

3. Commissioners – Supervise different ministries such as education, health, agriculture, and works.

4. Members of the State House of Assembly – Make laws for the state.

5. Judges – Interpret state laws and ensure justice.

STATE MOTTO

A state motto is a short statement that expresses the goals, values, or identity of a state.

Example: Lagos State Motto – “Centre of Excellence.”

Teachers may also mention the motto of the state where the school is located.

LESSON 2 – IMPORTANCE OF STATE GOVERNMENT

The State Government is important because it:

SUMMARY
