CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Nigeria has three levels of government: the Federal Government, State Government, and Local Government. Each level has different responsibilities, but they must work together to provide good services for the people. Sometimes, disagreements or poor communication may affect their work. When the three levels cooperate, development takes place more quickly, and people enjoy better roads, schools, healthcare, security, and other public services.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of separation of power, the functions of the three levels of government, the problems of power sharing, and the importance of cooperation among the Federal, State, and Local Governments.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF SEPARATION OF POWER

Separation of power means sharing government responsibilities among the Federal, State, and Local Governments so that each level performs its own duties.

This helps the government work effectively and prevents one level from doing everything.

FUNCTIONS OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

The Federal Government:

1. Protects the country.

2. Makes laws for Nigeria.

3. Maintains national peace and security.

4. Represents Nigeria in other countries.

5. Builds and maintains federal roads.

6. Provides federal schools and hospitals.

LESSON 2 – FUNCTIONS OF THE STATE GOVERNMENT

The State Government:

1. Builds and maintains state roads.

2. Provides secondary schools and hospitals.

3. Promotes agriculture and business.

4. Maintains peace and security within the state.

5. Supervises Local Governments.

6. Carries out state development projects.

FUNCTIONS OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT

The Local Government:

1. Maintains local roads.

2. Keeps markets and motor parks clean.

3. Provides primary healthcare services.

4. Supports primary schools.

5. Registers births and deaths.

PROBLEMS OF POWER SHARING

Sometimes problems arise between the three levels of government. These include:

SUMMARY
