PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain basics shapes.

2. identify and draw basic shape like triangle, square etc.

3. explain what patterns are.

4. demonstrate how to use basic shapes.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can identify and describe some of the basic shapes.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of Diagrams of Basic shapes, Pencils, Colour Pencils, Eraser, Drawing books.

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Basic shapes are made up of the plane and solid shapes.

The plane shapes are known as 2 dimensional shapes such as triangles, rectangles, squares, circles and quadrilateral. That’s, length and breadth while the solid shapes are the 3 dimensional shapes such as cubes, cuboids, cylinders, and spheres – length, breadth and height.

Note – For this lesson, we are focusing on 2 dimensional shapes. 

IDENTIFICATION OF 2 DIMENSIONAL SHAPES 

QUICK ACTIVITY 

There are ______ circles.

There are ______ triangles.

There is only ______ square.

There are ______ rectangles.

LESSON 2 – MEANING OF PATTERNS

Pattern is a repeated decorative design in a definite order.

To design a pattern, it requires shapes of different sizes and colours. A shape is a representation of the pattern. That’s, when one or more shapes is/are used to create patterns.

Designing patterns of basic shapes is the process of creating unique patterns using shapes.

SIMPLE PATTERNS 

Patterns can be found in nature such as in plants, plants, etc. Patterns can also be found in clothes, buildings, glass, tiles, etc.

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST) 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. Teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils into groups depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays chart showing basic shapes (2 dimensional shapes).

4. Teacher allows pupils as groups to identify and name each of the shape.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils identify each shape by name.

5. Teacher uses the chart and pupil’s relevant responses to introduce the lesson and leads a class discussion on meaning and drawing of basic shape.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept and meaning of basic shapes.

6. Teacher displays another chart showing basic shape patterns and allows the pupils as groups to identify the shapes in them.

7. Teacher uses the chart in activity 6 to lead a class discussion on the basic shape patterns.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils identify and describe patterns created with different shapes.

8. Teacher leads and guides pupils to design patterns using simple basic shapes. For example – using circles, triangle and rectangle, etc. to create patterns by drawing.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils follow the teacher’s leads and guidelines to draw patterns using basic shapes.

9. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board using appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the lesson summary by responding correctly to most of the questions and write as instructed.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
