ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Pupils have previously learned about the mouth, tongue, and lips and their uses in eating, speaking, and digestion.

This lesson builds on that knowledge by explaining that teeth are also found in the mouth and they work with the tongue and lips to bite, cut, tear, and chew food for proper digestion.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Chart showing the human teeth

2. Model or picture of the mouth with teeth

3. Mirror

4. Blackboard and chalk / whiteboard and marker

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

When we eat food, we use our teeth to bite and chew it into smaller pieces before swallowing.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF TEETH

Teeth are hard white structures found in the mouth used for biting and chewing food. They are arranged in rows on the upper and lower jaws of the mouth.

There are 32 adult teeth in total, 12 more than in the baby set. The remaining 4 emerge later than the others, generally between the ages of 17 and 2 1.

Types of Teeth

There are four main types of teeth:

  • Incisors 8
  • Canines 4
  • Premolars 8
  • Molars 12

Total – 32

LESSON 2 – FUNCTIONS OF EACH TYPE OF TEETH

1. Incisors

Incisors are the front teeth in the mouth. There are 8 of them, and they help in cutting and biting food for easy chewing and digestion.

Incisors are thin and sharp.

Functions:

  • They cut food into small pieces.
  • They help in biting food.

2. Canines

Canines are sharp teeth beside the incisors. There are 4 canines in the mouth, and they help in tearing and holding food for proper chewing and digestion.

They are sharp pointed teeth beside the incisors.

Functions:

  • They tear food.
  • They help in holding and cutting tough food.

3. Premolars

Premolars are teeth located between the canines and molars. There are 8 premolars, and they help in crushing and grinding food for proper digestion.

Functions:

  • The crush and grind food.
  • They help in chewing food.

4. Molars

Molars are large back teeth. There are 12 molars in the mouth, and they help in grinding food into fine particles for easy digestion.

Functions:

  • They grind food into fine particles.
  • They help in chewing food properly.

LESSON 3 – IMPORTANCE OF TEETH

1. They help in biting and chewing food.

2. They help in proper digestion of food.

3. They help in clear speech.

4. They give shape to the face.

5. They help maintain good health.

WEEKLY ASSESSMENT: TEST QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS/ASSIGNMENT

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that teeth are hard structures found in the mouth used for biting, cutting, tearing, and chewing food.

They also learned the four types of teeth, their numbers, and functions:

  • Incisors (8): Used for cutting and biting food.
  • Canines (4): Used for tearing and holding food.
  • Premolars (8): Used for crushing and grinding food.
  • Molars (12): Used for grinding food into fine particles.

Pupils further understood that each type of tooth has a special function that helps in proper chewing and digestion of food.

Overall, the lesson helps pupils appreciate the importance of teeth in eating, speaking, and maintaining good health.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. The teacher shows a chart or model of the human mouth with teeth.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils observe and identify the teeth.

2. The teacher asks pupils to open their mouths and observe their teeth in a mirror.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils observe and describe what they see.

3. The teacher introduces the topic: The Teeth and Types of Teeth.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils repeat the topic.

4. The teacher explains the meaning of teeth as hard structures in the mouth used for biting and chewing food.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils listen attentively.

5. The teacher identifies the four types of teeth: incisors, canines, premolars, and molars.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils mention the types after the teacher.

6. The teacher states the number and functions of each type of teeth.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils copy and respond to questions.

7. The teacher guides pupils to point out the different types of teeth on the chart.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils participate actively.

8. The teacher explains the importance of teeth in biting, chewing, and digestion.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils listen and ask questions.

9. The teacher demonstrates how teeth help in chewing using examples.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils observe and practice.

10. The teacher summarizes the lesson by revising types, number, and functions of teeth.
