By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

5. construct simple sentences using different types of verbs.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils already know that verbs are action words. In this lesson, they will learn how verbs are used to show actions and make sentences meaningful.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

A verb is a doing or action word. It tells us what a person, animal, or thing does.

Examples of Verbs

  • run
  • jump
  • eat
  • write
  • sing
  • read
  • play
  • sleep
  • dance
  • walk

Verbs in Sentences

1. I eat rice every day.

2. The boy runs fast.

3. She reads a book.

4. We play football.

5. The baby sleeps peacefully.

6. They sing songs.

7. My mother cooks food.

8. The pupils write in their notebooks.

TYPES OF VERBS

1. Action Verbs

These are verbs that show actions.

Examples:

  • run
  • jump
  • eat
  • write
  • sing

Sentences:

  • The boy runs fast.
  • I eat rice every day.
  • She writes neatly.

2. Helping Verbs (Auxiliary Verbs)

These are verbs that help the main verb in a sentence.

Examples:

  • is
  • am
  • are
  • was
  • were
  • has
  • have

Sentences:

  • She is reading a book.
  • They have finished their work.
  • We play football.
  • They read books.

3. Linking Verbs

These verbs connect the subject to more information about the subject.

Examples:

  • is
  • am
  • are
  • was
  • were

Sentences:

  • John is happy.
  • The food was delicious.
