CONTENT OF THE LESSON
LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION
TRADITIONAL FABRICS
Traditional fabrics are fabrics produced with local materials.
TYPES OF TRADITIONAL FABRICS
The different Types of traditional fabrics are listed below:
1. Aṣọ – oke
2. Atiku
3. Adire
4. Akwete
5. Saki
6. Bura
7. Anger
8. Opah/Ojah
9. Pelete
ASO – OKE
Aso oke is a woven fabric produced by the Yorubas.
ATIKU FABRIC
Atiku fabric is a Nigerian fine textile weaved by the Yoruba people but commonly used by most of the people in Nigeria.
ADIRE FABRIC
Adire fabric is a tie and dye fabric that is produced by the Yorubas of Ibadan, Lagos, Abeokuta and Osogbo as well as the Hausas in Kano and Maiduguri also produce it.
AKWETE FABRIC
Akwete fabric is a hand woven fabric produced by the people of Abia state.
SAKI FABRICS
Saki fabric ss a woven fabric with a guinea fowl indigo design produced by the people of Niger state.
BURA FABRICS
Bura fabric is a woven fabric produced by the people of Maiduguri. It is commonly used for making wrappers.
ANGER FABRICS
Anger fabric is a fabric produced by the Tiv people of Benue State. It is usually in black and white stripes.
OPAH/OJAH FABRICS
Opah/Ojah fabric is a fabric produced by the people of Aloago in Nassarawa state, Tarba and Kogi State.
PELETE FABRICS
Pelete fabric is a hand woven fabric produced by Ijo Kalabari people of Rivers State. It usually in different colours such as red, white, indigo, yellow and black.
LESSON 2 – TRADITIONAL FABRICS AND DRESSES IN NIGERIA
Traditional dresses are dresses wore by people of the same culture and tribe. That’s, they are dresses represent the culture or identity of a specific people or ethnic group.
Traditional dresses are made with traditional fabrics. They are known as indigenous, cultural or ethnic dresses.
EXAMPLES OF TRADITIONAL DRESSES IN NIGERIA
Yoruba Traditional Fabrics and Dresses
- Fabrics – Aso Oke and Adire Fabrics
- Men dresses – Agbada, Buba and Sokoto with matching cap
- Women dresses – Buba and Iro with matching gele
Igbo Traditional Fabrics and Dresses
- Fabrics – Akwete and Isi Agu Fabrics
- Men dresses – Shirt and Wrapper with matching cap
- Women dresses – Short wrappers with plenty of beads of different types and styles.
Hausa Traditional Fabrics and Dresses
- Fabrics – Bura and Saki Fabrics
- Men dresses – Sleeveless with pair of three-quarter shorts
- Women dresses – Sleeveless half-top worn over a wrapper
LESSON 3 – OCCASIONS WHERE TRADITIONAL FABRICS AND DRESSES ARE USED

4. Folkloric dance performances
5. Traditional coronation such as chieftaincy, kingship, and crown prince coronations.
6. Burial rites, etc.
IMPORTANCE OF TRADITIONAL FABRICS AND DRESSES
The importance of traditional fabrics and dresses are as follows:
1. It promotes our cultural heritages.
2. It promotes peace and unity among the people.
3. It creates job opportunities for people in fashion industry such as manufacturing, distribution and sewing.
4. It is a great source of income for people in weaving and designing.

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

4. Teacher lets the pupils as groups identify and describe bases on ethnic groups or tribes.
