CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Nigeria is a country with many ethnic groups and cultures. People may speak different languages, eat different foods, dress differently, celebrate different festivals, and practise different customs and traditions.

Although these cultural differences exist, Nigerians can live together peacefully, respect one another, and work together as one people. This is known as unity in cultural diversity.

Culture is the way of life of a people, while customs and traditions are practices and beliefs that are passed from one generation to another. Some customs may change over time because of education, technology, religion, urbanisation, and contact with other cultures.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about the meaning of cultural diversity and unity, culture as a people’s way of life, customs, traditions, changeable customs, and the importance of unity among people from different cultural backgrounds.

MEANING OF CULTURAL DIVERSITY

Cultural diversity refers to the existence of different cultures, languages, beliefs, customs, traditions, foods, dressing styles, festivals, and ways of life among different groups of people.

Nigeria is culturally diverse because it is made up of many ethnic groups with different cultures and traditions.

MEANING OF UNITY

Unity means people living and working together peacefully despite their differences.

Unity encourages people from different cultural backgrounds to cooperate, respect one another, and work together for the development of their community and country.

MEANING OF UNITY IN CULTURAL DIVERSITY

Unity in cultural diversity means people from different cultural backgrounds living together peacefully, respecting their differences, and working together as one people.

For example, Nigerians from different ethnic groups can live, work, study, trade, and celebrate together while respecting one another’s cultures.

CULTURE AS A PEOPLE’S WAY OF LIFE

Culture is the total way of life of a people. It includes the things people learn, practise, and pass from one generation to another.

Culture includes:

1. Language – The language or languages spoken by a people.

2. Food – Traditional meals and methods of preparing food.

3. Dressing – The traditional clothes and styles of dressing.

4. Religion and beliefs – Religious practices, beliefs, and values of the people.

5. Music and dance – Traditional songs, musical instruments, and dances.

6. Marriage practices – Traditional ways of arranging and celebrating marriage.

7. Festivals – Special cultural celebrations observed by the people.

8. Greetings – The ways people greet and show respect to one another.

9. Traditional occupations – Traditional jobs such as farming, fishing, hunting, weaving, and blacksmithing.

10. Arts and crafts – Traditional activities such as pottery, carving, weaving, bead-making, and basket-making.

11. Customs and traditions – Accepted ways of behaving and practices passed from one generation to another.

CUSTOMS

Customs are the accepted ways of behaving or doing things in a particular society or community.

Examples include:

  • Ways of greeting elders
  • Traditional marriage practices
  • Respect for older people
  • Ways of welcoming visitors
  • Traditional naming practices
  • Some customs may change when society changes.

TRADITIONS

Traditions are beliefs, practices, and ways of doing things that have been passed from one generation to another.

  • Traditions help people remember and preserve their cultural heritage.

CHANGEABLE CUSTOMS

Some customs can change over time because of education, technology, religion, urbanisation, contact with other cultures, and changes in society.

For example, some traditional methods of communication, dressing, marriage arrangements, or food preparation may change as society develops.

However, customs that promote peace, respect, unity, and human dignity should be encouraged.
