THEME: 

TOPIC: How to Grow Crops – Tuber

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor):

  1. Give examples of crops;
  2. Narrate and demonstrate the processes involved in raising crops;
  3. Raise seedling of some tuber crops;
  4. Identify safety signs, labels and symbols on agricultural inputs.

ENTRY BEHAVIOR

The pupils are required to already have learned how to grow crop – grain.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

  1. School farm; Farm tools e.g. machetes, hoes, hand trowel, etc.;
  2. Planting materials and inputs such as seeds of vegetables e.g. potato & yam sets, cassava cuttings;
  3. Fertilizer/manure pesticides;
  4. Charts of safety signs and symbols;
  5. Samples of labels. 

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

TUBER CROP – A tuber crop is part of the plant that grows beneath the soil’s surface.

EXAMPLES OF TUBER CROPS

  1. Yam
  2. Cocoyam
  3. Irish
  4. Potato
  5. Sweet Potato
  6. Carrot
  7. Cassava 

PROCEDURE FOR RAISING FARM CROPS

  • Pre – Planting Activities 
  1. Choice of a suitable site;
  2. Land clearing and stumping;
  3. Selection seedlings;
  4. Panting locally grown crops on ridges and beds in the school farm;
  5. Planting (spacing 1m x 1m), around June (rainy season or around October for dry season, planting season or around October). 
  • Post – Planting Activities 
  1. Watering, Mulching, thinning and supply;
  2. Application of fertilizer/ manure;
  3. Weeding
  4. Staking (where applicable);
  5. Application of pesticides;
  6. Harvesting of manure crops. 
  • Post – Harvest Activities 
  1. Processing/preservation
  2. Storage
  3. Marketing

Safety Signs, Symbols, and Labels such as:

  1. Skull and crossbones;
  2. Chemical warming labels;
  3. Treated seeds;
  4. Veterinary drugs;
  5. Implements; etc. 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

  1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
  2. Guides pupils to raise tuber crops during the growing season;
  3. Supplies appropriate tools and planting materials;
  4. Pupil’s activities – Bring the required farm tools from home.
  5. Takes pupils to the school farm and maps out the area to use for the year;
  6. Allows pupils to prepare land themselves; 
  7. Pupil’s activities – Prepare the land for planting; carry out planting activities as directed by the teacher; plant seeds in the nursery and transplant to field.
  8. Guides pupils in identifying and explaining safety signs, labels and symbols on agricultural inpute before and during planting, harvesting activities including safe handling of treated seeds, veterinary drugs, implements, etc.;
  9. Pupil’s activities – Pupils keep farm records.
  10. Pupil’s activities – Care for the farm themselves.
  11. Gives a board summary.
  12. Pupil’s activities – Copy board summary. 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

LESSON EVALUATION

Pupil to: 

  1. List three crops grown in your area;
  2. State the various activities involved in growing a named field crop;
  3. Demonstrate how to plant yam;
  4. Care and maintain the school farm;
  5. Harvest crops when mature; Keep records of farm activities performed;
  6. Explain 2 safety signs or symbols on agricultural inputs;
  7. Bring 2 labels on agricultural inputs.
