By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain seam and mention types of seam.

2. describe the steps for making plain and open seams.

4. produce an album showing stages of making plain and open seams.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can do simple stitches.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Different garments showing different seams.

2. Charts showing stages of seam making.

3. Albums showing samples of stages of seam making.

4. Brown paper, coloured threads, scissors, needles, pins, etc.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Clothing construction process is any activities that prepare you in advance for complete cloth construction.

This process involves measurement, cutting, sewing and designing a garment.

One of the clothing construction processes is known as SEAM.

 

 

MEANING OF SEAM 

Seam is a line where pieces of fabric and other materials are sewn together in a garment.

A garment is an item of clothing.

For examples –

  • sewing shoulders
  • sides
  • sleeves
  • waistline
  • collar

 

Note – The place (line) where the above are joined together is called seam. 

 

 

TYPES OF SEAM 

1.  Plain and Open seam

3. Run and Fell seam

4. French seam

 

 

MEANING OF PLAIN AND OPEN SEAM

Plain and open seam is a flat seam showing no stitches on the right side. 

This is possible by sewing two pieces of fabric together with the wrong sides facing.

 

 

LESSON 2 – METHODS OF MAKING PLAIN AND OPEN SEAM

1. Cut two pieces of fabric materials to required length.

2. Place the two pieces of materials together, right side facing pin..

3. Tack together and stitch on the wrong side remove the pins..

4. Neaten the raw edges and press.

5. Display of simple plain and open articles on brown paper.

 

 

PRACTICE AND DEMONSTRATE PLAIN AND OPEN SEAM

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Displays samples of two or more t-shirt.

3. Organizes pupils in groups or pairs.

4. Gives each groups a t-shirt.

5. Asks the groups to identify the following – sewing shoulders, sides, sleeves, waistline, collar, etc. :

6. Guides groups to identify the place (line) where each one of the part are joined together.

Pupil’s Activities – Examine and identify the line where sewing shoulders, sides, sleeves, waistline, collar, etc. are joined together.

7. Tells pupils, a line where two pieces of fabric are sewn together in a cloth is called seam.

8. Uses the groups actively and their responses to introduce the lesson – meaning and types of seam.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept and type of seam.

9. Leads a discussion on seam using cloth design such as native and cooperate wear or design.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the class discussion by identity seam on any cloth wear or designer.

10. Gets two two pieces of fabric materials for each.

11. Demonstrates and guides the groups or pairs to make plain and open seam.

Pupil’s Activities – Watch and demonstrate how to make plain and open seam.

12. Uses the group responses to lead a discussion on the meaning and steps in making of plain and open seams.

Pupil’s Activities – Discuss how plain and open seam is made, then define.

13. Exhibits different types of seam – plain and open seam.

Pupil’s Activities – Examine open seam exhibited by the teacher, then practice and demonstrate how to make open seams on brown paper following teacher’s demonstration and make an album show stages of make plain and open seams.

14. Summarizes the lesson lesson on the board with appropriate evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson and write as instructed.

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
