By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. state the meaning of food nutrients.

2. name the ingredients in a food nutrients.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Charts of components of a balanced diet.

2. Pictorial display of healthy children.

3. Pictorial display of children suffering from kwashiorkor, goiter, knock/bow legs.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES 

Teacher’s Activities – Display pictorial display of children with good health and children suffering from kwashiorkor, goiter, knock/bow legs for the pupils to examine and discuss nature of the two children.

Teacher’s Activities – Listen to the pupil’s discussion and give reasons for the good or bad health and introduce the lesson – Food Nutrients – Balance Diet (Primary 3)

 

MEANING OF FOOD NUTRIENTS (BALANCED DIET) 

Food nutrients are the different types of food that provide adequate amounts of the nutrients necessary for good health.

This is also known as balanced diet.

 

 

Teacher’s Activities – Engage the pupils to mention the foods eaten this morning. Use the lists of foods eating by the pupils to talk on composition of foods nutrients.

 

COMPOSITION OF FOOD NUTRIENTS (BALANCED DIET) 

Balanced diet contained the following –

1. Carbohydrates 

Carbohydrates are the energy giving foods.

For example, rice, yam, maize, bread, etc.

 

2. Proteins 

Proteins are the body building foods.

For example, eggs, meat, fish, plantain, etc.

 

3. Fats and Oils 

Fats and oils are the oily and fatty foods.

For example, groundnut, groundnut oil, palm oil, butter, etc.

 

4. Minerals 

Minerals are the fruits and vegetables foods. They contain high content of minerals.

 

5. Vitamins 

Vitamins are the fruits and vegetables foods. They contain high content of minerals.

 

6. Water

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Lists the different food eaten by each pupils in a day.

 

 

3. Classifies the food into food types.

Pupil’s Activities – Closely observe and identify foodstuffs that can make up a balanced diet.

4. Forms the list, state what makes up a balanced diet or unbalanced diet.

Pupil’s Activities – Keep a record of all the food you eat in a day.

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
