Three (3) Dimensional Shapes – Cubes, Cuboids and Prisms (Primary 5)
MATHEMATICS
SMASE – ASEI PDSI METHOD
THIRD TERM
WEEK 5
PRIMARY 5
TOPIC: 3 Dimensional Shapes – Cube, Cuboid and Prisms
LEARNING AREA
Lesson One – Introduction to 3 dimensional shapes
Lesson Two – Nets of Cubes and Cuboids
Lesson Three – Net of triangular and square Pyramid
Lesson Four – Nets of Square base and triangular prism
Lesson Five – Revision, Quantitative and Test
TIME – 40 Minutes each.
LEARNING OUTCOME
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
1. identify prisms and pyramids.
2. state properties of 3 dimensional shapes such as cubes, cuboids, pyramids, etc.
3. draw nets of 3-D shapes.
4. construct cube, Cuboid, and prisms.
5. Quantitative reasoning related to 3-dimensional shapes.
RATIONALE
The objects around you — the ones you can pick up, touch, and move around — are 3 dimensional. These shapes have a third dimension: depth. Cubes, prisms, pyramids, spheres, cones, and cylinders are all examples of 3 dimensional objects. The 3 dimensional objects can be rotated in space.
The concept of 3 dimensional shapes will enable pupils to understand and appreciate their relevance in our daily life.
LEARNING MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
Graph paper
Cardboard sheets
Models of 3 dimensional shapes, etc.
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE
A cube, rectangular prism, sphere, cone and cylinder are the basic 3-dimensional shapes we can see around us. The concept of 3 dimensional shapes will expose to discover various 3 dimensional shapes.
