3. Identify the phases of the high jump.
4. Describe each phase of the high jump.
5. Demonstrate the basic techniques of the high jump safely.
ENTRY BEHAVIOUR
Pupils have previously learned the meaning, importance, and phases of the long jump. They also practised the approach run, take-off, flight, and landing during the long jump.
This lesson builds on that knowledge by introducing the high jump, another athletics event that requires speed, balance, coordination, strength, and proper jumping techniques to jump over a horizontal bar and land safely on a landing mat.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
1. High jump stand
2. Crossbar
3. Landing mat
4. Cones or markers
5. Whistle
6. Pictures or charts of high jump athletes
7. Whiteboard and marker
METHOD OF TEACHING
Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Athletics includes different jumping events such as the long jump and the high jump. In the high jump, an athlete runs towards a horizontal bar and jumps over it without knocking it down, landing safely on a soft mat.
In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of the high jump, the phases involved, and the basic techniques for performing the event safely.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF ATHLETICS
Athletics is a group of sporting activities that includes running, jumping, throwing, and walking events.
MEANING OF HIGH JUMP
The high jump is an athletics event in which an athlete runs towards a horizontal bar, jumps over it without knocking it down, and lands safely on a soft landing mat.
The aim of the high jump is to clear the highest possible bar without touching or dropping it.
PHASES OF THE HIGH JUMP
1. Approach Run – The approach run is the first phase of the high jump in which the athlete runs towards the high jump bar at a controlled speed to gain momentum and prepare for take-off.
2. Take-off – The take-off is the phase where the athlete plants one foot firmly on the ground and pushes the body upward to begin the jump over the bar.
3. Flight – The flight is the phase during which the athlete’s body moves through the air over the crossbar while maintaining balance and avoiding contact with the bar.
4. Landing – The landing is the final phase of the high jump in which the athlete lands safely on the soft landing mat after clearing the bar, helping to reduce impact and prevent injury.
LESSON 2 – IMPORTANCE OF HIGH JUMP
1. It improves leg strength.
2. It develops balance and coordination.
3. It increases flexibility.
4. It improves body control.
5. It promotes physical fitness.
6. It builds confidence and courage.
7. It encourages discipline and perseverance.
SAFETY RULES DURING HIGH JUMP
1. Warm up before jumping.
2. Wear appropriate sports clothing and shoes.
3. Ensure the landing mat is soft and properly positioned.
4. Check that the crossbar is correctly placed.
5. Follow the teacher’s instructions.
6. Wait for your turn before attempting the jump.
7. Land safely on the landing mat.
8. Avoid pushing or distracting others during the activity.

SUMMARY
In this lesson, pupils learned that athletics is a sporting activity that includes running, jumping, throwing, and walking events.
They also learned that the high jump is an athletics event in which an athlete runs towards a horizontal bar, jumps over it without knocking it down, and lands safely on a landing mat.
Pupils identified and explained the four phases of the high jump, which are:
- Approach run – running towards the bar to gain speed and prepare for jumping.
- Take-off – pushing the body upward using one foot.
- Flight – moving over the bar while keeping balance and avoiding contact with it.
- Landing – landing safely on a soft mat.
Finally, pupils understood that the high jump helps to improve strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, courage, and physical fitness, and that safety rules must always be followed during practice.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
Step 1: Introduction – The teacher shows a picture or video of a high jump athlete and asks pupils what they observe.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils observe and describe what they see in the high jump event.
Step 2: Meaning of Athletics and High Jump – The teacher explains the meaning of athletics and the high jump.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils explain the meaning in their own words.
Step 3: Phases of High Jump – The teacher explains the four phases:
- Approach run
- Take-off
- Flight
- Landing
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils identify and describe each phase.
Step 4: Practical Demonstration – The teacher demonstrates the correct high jump techniques using a crossbar and landing mat.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils observe carefully and practise each phase one after the other.
Step 5: Group Practice – The teacher divides pupils into groups to practise the high jump safely.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils take turns performing the approach run, take-off, flight, and landing.
Step 6: Safety Rules Discussion – The teacher explains safety precautions during the high jump.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils mention and demonstrate safety rules.
Step 7: Lesson Summary – The teacher reviews the meaning, phases, and importance of the high jump.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils answer oral questions and demonstrate the skill.
Step 8: Evaluation – The teacher assesses pupils through questions and observation of practical performance.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils respond to questions and participate actively in practical demonstration.
CONCLUSION
To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
