CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Athletics is one of the oldest sporting activities in the world. It includes running, jumping, and throwing events. One of the jumping events is the long jump, where an athlete runs fast, jumps from a take-off board, and lands safely in a sand pit.
In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of athletics, the meaning of long jump, and the phases involved in performing a successful long jump.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF ATHLETICS
Athletics is a group of sporting activities that includes running, jumping, throwing, and walking events.
MEANING OF LONG JUMP
The long jump is an athletics event in which an athlete runs along a runway, takes off from a take-off board, jumps as far as possible into a sand pit, and lands safely.
The aim of the long jump is to achieve the greatest horizontal distance from the take-off board to the point of landing.
PHASES OF THE LONG JUMP
1. Approach Run (Run-up) – The approach run is the first phase of the long jump in which the athlete runs quickly along the runway towards the take-off board to gain enough speed for the jump.
2. Take-off – The take-off is the phase where the athlete places one foot firmly on the take-off board and pushes the body upward and forward into the air.
3. Flight – The flight is the phase during which the athlete is in the air after taking off. The athlete keeps the body balanced and positions the arms and legs properly to achieve a longer jump.
4. Landing – The landing is the final phase of the long jump. The athlete lands safely in the sand pit with both feet together and bends the knees to reduce the impact and avoid injury.
LESSON 2 – IMPORTANCE OF THE LONG JUMP
1. It improves speed and agility.
2. It develops leg strength.
3. It improves balance and coordination.
4. It increases flexibility.
5. It promotes physical fitness.
6. It builds confidence and courage.
7. It develops sportsmanship.
SAFETY RULES DURING LONG JUMP
1. Warm up before jumping.
2. Wear appropriate sports clothing and shoes.
3. Ensure the sand pit is soft and level.
4. Wait for your turn before jumping.
5. Follow the teacher’s instructions.
6. Land with both feet together.
7. Avoid pushing or distracting others during the activity.
LESSON 3 – PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATION OF LONG JUMP
The teacher demonstrates the correct techniques for performing the long jump while pupils observe and practise each phase.
1. Warm-Up
- Stretch the arms and legs.
- Jog gently for 2–3 minutes.
- Perform light jumping and bending exercises.
2. Approach Run (Run-up)
- Stand at the starting point of the runway.
- Run forward at a steady speed.
- Gradually increase your speed as you approach the take-off board.
- Keep your eyes focused on the take-off board.
3. Take-Off
- Place your stronger foot firmly on the take-off board.
- Swing both arms forward and upward.
- Push the body upward and forward using one leg.
- Keep your body balanced during take-off.
4. Flight
- Lift your knees slightly while in the air.
- Stretch your arms forward to maintain balance.
- Keep your eyes focused on the landing area.
5. Landing
- Extend both feet forward before touching the sand.
- Land with both feet together.
- Bend your knees immediately after landing to reduce the impact.
- Move forward after landing without falling backward.

SUMMARY
In this lesson, pupils learned that athletics is a group of sporting activities that includes running, jumping, throwing, and walking events.
They also learned that the long jump is an athletics event in which an athlete runs along a runway, takes off from a take-off board, jumps as far as possible, and lands safely in a sand pit.
Pupils identified and explained the four phases of the long jump, namely:
- Approach run – running towards the take-off board to gain speed.
- Take-off – pushing off the take-off board with one foot.
- Flight – maintaining balance while in the air.
- Landing – landing safely with both feet together in the sand pit.
Finally, pupils learned that practising the long jump helps to improve speed, strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, and physical fitness, while observing safety rules helps to prevent injuries during the activity.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
Step 1: Introduction – The teacher asks pupils if they have ever seen or participated in a long jump event and displays a picture or video of a long jump.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils observe the picture or video and share their experiences of the long jump.
Step 2: Meaning of Athletics and Long Jump – The teacher explains the meaning of athletics and the meaning of the long jump.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils explain the meaning of athletics and long jump in their own words.
Step 3: Phases of the Long Jump – The teacher explains the four phases of the long jump:
- Approach run
- Take-off
- Flight
- Landing
The teacher explains the purpose of each phase.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils identify and describe each phase of the long jump.
Step 4: Practical Demonstration – The teacher demonstrates the correct techniques for:
- Approach run
- Take-off
- Flight
- Landing
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils observe carefully and practise each phase one after another.
Step 5: Individual and Group Practice – The teacher allows pupils to practise the long jump individually and later in small groups while giving corrections.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils practise each phase of the long jump and support one another during group practice.
Step 6: Safety Rules – The teacher explains the safety precautions to observe during the long jump.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils mention and demonstrate the safety rules.
Step 7: Lesson Summary – The teacher reviews the meaning of the long jump, the four phases, and the safety rules.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils summarize the lesson by answering oral questions.
Step 8: Evaluation – The teacher asks oral and written questions and observes pupils as they demonstrate the phases of the long jump.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils answer the questions and demonstrate the approach run, take-off, flight, and landing correctly.
CONCLUSION
To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
