CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

People often sing together during school assemblies, church services, celebrations, and cultural events. When a group of singers performs together under the guidance of a conductor, it is called choral singing. To perform well, choir members must sing in harmony, keep to the rhythm, and follow the conductor’s instructions.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of choral singing, its types (classification), and the correct way to perform choral singing as members of a choir.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF CHORAL SINGING

Choral singing is the singing of songs by a group of people (a choir) under the direction of a choir conductor or choir master. The singers perform together in harmony and rhythm.

TYPES (CLASSIFICATION) OF CHORAL SINGING

Choral singing can be classified into:

1. Children’s Choir – A choir made up of children.

2. Male Choir – A choir consisting only of male singers.

3. Female Choir – A choir consisting only of female singers.

4. Mixed Choir – A choir made up of both male and female singers.

5. School Choir – A choir organised in schools.

6. Church Choir – A choir that performs during religious services.

LESSON 3 – PERFORMANCE OF CHORAL SINGING

To perform choral singing successfully, choir members should:

1. Stand in the correct singing posture.

2. Watch the conductor carefully.

3. Sing with one voice in harmony.

4. Pronounce words clearly.

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that choral singing is the act of singing together as a group under the direction of a choir conductor.

Step 2: Meaning of Choral Singing – The teacher explains that choral singing is the singing of songs by a group of people under the direction of a choir conductor.
