3. Charts on food nutrients, sources and functions.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

MEANING OF FOOD 

Foods are solid or liquid substances that gives essential nutrients to the body. Food nutrients are the essential substances present in the food that help the body to function well.

 

CLASSES OF FOOD NUTRIENTS 

There are six (6) main classes of nutrients that the body needs.

 

These are carbohydrates, proteins, fats and oils, vitamins, minerals and water.

It is important that everyone consumes these six nutrients on a daily basis to help them build their bodies and maintain their health.

 

1. CARBOHYDRATES 

Source of carbohydrate – rice, yam, bread, etc.

 

2. PROTEIN

Sources of proteins are eggs, milk, bean, etc.

 

3. VITAMINS 

Source of vitamins – fruits like oranges, pawpaw, vegetables, etc.

 

4. FAT AND OILS 

Source of fat and oils – palm oil, groundnut oil, vegetables oil, oily fish, butter, etc.

 

6. MINERALS SALT 

Source of minerals salt – Iodised salt, liver, eggs, etc.

 

6. WATER 

Source of water – drinking water, fruits juice and other drinks

 

LESSON 2 – FUNCTIONS OF FOOD NUTRIENTS 

 

1. CARBOHYDRATE

Carbohydrate supplies heat and energy to play.

 

2. PROTEIN

Proteins builds the body and repair body tissue.

 

3. VITAMIN 

Vitamins help to fight against diseases in the body.

 

4. FATS AND OILS

Fats and oils keep the warm and give energy to the body.

 

5. WATER

Water regulates the temperature of the body.

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Discuss the type of food nutrients, sources and their functions with the pupils.

 

Pupil’s Activities – Participate in discussing the type of food nutrients, sources and their functions with one another.

3. Provides real food items and chart of the classes of food based on their nutrients.

Pupil’s Activities – Observe the chart on display.

4. Summarize the lesson on the board.

Copy short notes on daily cleaning of rooms.
