CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Nigeria has many ethnic groups with different languages, cultures, and traditions. These differences can enrich the country when people respect one another.
However, when people allow ethnic differences to cause hatred, discrimination, or division, they can create serious problems. These problems may include communal conflicts, political violence, and nepotism.
In this lesson, pupils will learn about the consequences of ethnicity and ways of promoting peace, fairness, and unity in Nigeria.
LESSON 1 AND LESSON 2 – MEANING OF CONSEQUENCES OF ETHNICITY
Consequences of ethnicity are the problems that can happen when people allow ethnic differences to cause division, hatred, or unfair treatment.
CONSEQUENCES OF ETHNICITY
1. Communal Conflicts
Communal conflict is a disagreement or fight between groups of people living in a community.
Ethnic differences can sometimes lead to conflicts between communities.
Examples of effects include:
- Fighting between groups.
- Destruction of property.
- Loss of lives.
- People leaving their homes.
- Fear and insecurity.

- Destruction of property.
- Injuries and loss of lives.
- Fear among citizens.
- Disruption of peace.
3. Nepotism
Nepotism means giving unfair favour or opportunities to relatives or members of one’s own group.

Nepotism can lead to:
- Unfair treatment.
- Lack of equal opportunities.

- Division among people.
LESSON 3 – OTHER CONSEQUENCES OF ETHNICITY
Other consequences may include:
4. Discrimination – Treating people unfairly because of their ethnic group.
