Pupils have previously learned about the consequences of ethnicity, such as communal conflicts, political violence, nepotism, and discrimination.

This lesson builds on that knowledge by teaching pupils about ways of solving the problems of ethnicity and promoting peace and unity in Nigeria.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Nigeria is made up of many ethnic groups with different languages, cultures, and traditions. These differences should not stop Nigerians from living together peacefully.

Problems such as discrimination, conflict, nepotism, and political violence can divide people. However, these problems can be reduced when people respect one another, treat everyone fairly, and work together.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about ways of solving the problems of ethnicity and promoting peace, unity, and cooperation among Nigerians.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF SOLUTIONS TO ETHNICITY

Solutions to ethnicity are the ways of reducing ethnic problems and promoting peace, unity, and cooperation among different ethnic groups.

WAYS OF SOLVING THE PROBLEMS OF ETHNICITY

1. Respect for all ethnic groups – We should respect people from different ethnic groups.

2. Equal treatment – Everyone should be treated fairly, regardless of their ethnic group.

3. Avoid discrimination – People should not be treated badly because of their ethnic group.

4. Promote unity – Nigerians should work together as one people.

5. Respect different cultures – We should respect the languages, traditions, and cultures of other groups.

6. Equal opportunities – Jobs, education, and other opportunities should be given fairly.

7. Peaceful dialogue – People should settle disagreements through discussion instead of fighting.

8. Avoid Nepotism – Leaders should not give unfair advantages to relatives or members of their ethnic group.

9. Encourage inter-ethnic friendship – People from different ethnic groups should live and work together peacefully.

10. Promote national unity – Nigerians should put the interest of Nigeria above ethnic interests.
