CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Pupils have seen people voting during elections, traditional rulers leading their communities, and soldiers protecting the country. These leaders serve the people in different ways and belong to different systems of government. Although these systems have different methods of leadership, they all help to maintain peace, order, and development.
In this lesson, pupils will learn the similarities and differences between democratic, traditional, and military governments and understand how each type of government serves the people.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF TYPES OF GOVERNMENT
Types of government are the different ways a country or community is governed.
The three types learned are:
- Democratic Government
- Traditional Government
- Military Government
SIMILARITIES AMONG THE TYPES OF GOVERNMENT
Although they are different, they all:
1. Provide leadership.
2. Maintain peace and order.
3. Make decisions for the people.
4. Promote the welfare of citizens.
5. Help to develop the community or country.
LESSON 2 – DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TYPES OF GOVERNMENT
1. Democratic Government
- Leaders are elected by the people.
- Citizens vote during elections.
- People enjoy freedom of speech.
- Leaders serve for a fixed period.
2. Traditional Government
- Led by kings, chiefs, emirs, obas, or obis.
- Leadership is based on tradition or inheritance.
- Traditional rulers preserve culture and customs.
- They help to settle disputes in their communities.
3. Military Government
- Led by soldiers.
- Leaders are not elected by the people.
- The military takes control of government.
- Military rule is usually temporary.

SUMMARY
