CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Pupils have seen bad roads, flooding, unemployment, damaged public facilities, and news about insecurity in their communities or on television. They have also seen government repairing roads, building schools, creating jobs, and providing security to solve these problems. These challenges make it difficult for the government to provide all the services people need.
In this lesson, pupils will learn about the problems facing the Federal, State, and Local Governments, their possible solutions, and how citizens can help government solve these challenges.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF PROBLEMS FACING GOVERNMENT
Problems facing government are the challenges that make it difficult for the government to provide good services and develop the country.
COMMON PROBLEMS FACING GOVERNMENT
1. Corruption – Some public officers misuse government money or property for personal gain.
2. Lack of Funds – Government may not have enough money to provide all the needed services.
3. Unemployment – Many people do not have jobs, making it difficult for families to meet their needs.
4. Insecurity – Crimes such as theft, kidnapping, and violence make it difficult for government to maintain peace.
5. Poor Roads and Infrastructure – Bad roads, damaged bridges, and poor public facilities affect transportation and development.
6. Poor Maintenance of Public Property – Some government facilities are damaged because people do not take good care of them.
7. Population Growth – A rapidly increasing population puts pressure on schools, hospitals, roads, and other public services.
8. Natural Disasters – Floods, erosion, and other natural disasters can damage roads, buildings, and farms.

SUMMARY
In this lesson, pupils learned that problems facing government are challenges that make it difficult for the government to provide services and develop the country.
