This lesson builds on that knowledge by teaching pupils about government emergency lines in Nigeria and the security agencies to contact during different emergencies.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Emergencies such as crime, road accidents, fire outbreaks, and other dangerous situations can happen at home, in school, on the road, or in the community.

Emergency phone numbers help people to quickly contact the appropriate government agency or emergency service for assistance when there is danger.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about government emergency phone numbers in Nigeria, the security agencies to contact during emergencies, and the proper ways of making emergency calls.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBERS

Emergency phone numbers are special numbers used to quickly contact government agencies or emergency workers when there is danger, an accident, fire, crime, or another serious emergency.

IMPORTANT EMERGENCY NUMBERS IN NIGERIA

1. 112 – General Emergency – For urgent emergencies requiring assistance

2. 199 – Nigeria Police Force – For police emergencies and reporting danger or crime

3. 122 – Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) – For road crashes and road-related emergencies

4. 112 – Federal Fire Service – For fire and other emergency distress calls

The Federal Government’s emergency information page lists 112 and 199 for Police emergencies, while the Federal Fire Service confirms 112 as an emergency number. The FRSC officially lists 122 as its toll-free emergency line.

LESSON 2 – SECURITY AND EMERGENCY AGENCIES TO CONTACT

1. Nigeria Police Force

The Police help to protect lives and property, maintain law and order, and respond to crime and other security emergencies.

Emergency numbers: 199 or 112.

2. Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)

The FRSC responds to road traffic crashes and other road emergencies.

Its official emergency toll-free number is 122.

3. Federal Fire Service

The Federal Fire Service responds to fire outbreaks and other emergencies.

Its official contact page lists 112 and 08032003557.

RULES FOR USING EMERGENCY NUMBERS

Pupils should:

1. Call only when there is a real emergency.

2. Remain calm when making the call.

3. Speak clearly.

SUMMARY
