WORD FORMATION – FORMATTING ADJECTIVES FROM NOUNS

MEANING AND EXAMPLES OF NOUNS AND ADJECTIVES

1. NOUNS – A noun is the name of a person, place, animal, or thing.

 

Examples of Nouns

Person: boy, teacher, doctor

Place: school, market, hospital

Animal: dog, goat, lion

Thing: book, table, car

 

Sentences with Nouns

The teacher is in the school.

I put my book on the table.

The dog chased the goat.

 

2. ADJECTIVES – An adjective is a word that describes a noun. It tells us more about the noun (size, colour, number, quality, etc.).

 

Examples of Adjectives – big, small, tall, short, red, happy, clean

Sentences with Adjectives

She has a big bag.

The red ball is mine.

He is a happy boy.

 

WORD FORMATION

Forming Adjectives from Nouns – Some adjectives are formed by adding letters (suffixes) to nouns.

A. Noun + –ful

beauty – beautiful, She is a beautiful girl.

care – careful, Be careful on the road.

joy – joyful, It was a joyful day.

 

B. Noun + –less

hope – hopeless, The case looked hopeless.

care – careless, He was careless with his books.

fear – fearless, The fearless boy spoke out.

 

C. Noun + –ous

danger – dangerous, Snakes are dangerous animals.

courage – courageous, The soldier was courageous.

fame – famous, He is a famous player.

 

D. Noun + –y

cloud – cloudy, The sky is cloudy today.

sun – sunny, It is a sunny morning.

rain – rainy, We had a rainy day.

 

E. Noun + –al

nation – national, Nigeria has a national flag.

culture – cultural, We enjoyed the cultural dance.
