CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Intonation is the rise and fall of the voice when speaking.

MEANING OF QUESTIONS

Questions are sentences used to ask for information. They are usually spoken with a rising intonation (⬆) at the end.

Examples:

1. Are you coming? ⬆

2. Where is your book? ⬆

3. Do you like rice? ⬆

MEANING OF STATEMENTS

Statements are sentences that give information. They are usually spoken with a falling intonation (⬇) at the end.

Examples:

1. The boy is in the classroom. ⬇

2. She is my friend. ⬇

3. We are going to school. ⬇

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STATEMENTS AND QUESTIONS

STATEMENTS – QUESTIONS 

1. Give information – Ask for information

2. Falling intonation ⬇ – Rising intonation ⬆

3. End with a full stop – End with a question mark

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson by asking pupils to identify statements and questions.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils respond to the teacher’s questions and give examples of statements and questions.

2. The teacher organizes the pupils into groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

Pupils’ Activities: Each pupil belongs to a group.

3. The teacher reads different sentences aloud (statements and questions) while the pupils listen carefully to the correct rising and falling intonation.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils listen attentively and repeat the sentences using correct intonation patterns.

4. The teacher uses charts/flashcards to show examples of statements and questions and explains their intonation patterns.
