CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Every day, we see many objects around us such as bottles, cups, fruits, books, and flower vases. Artists carefully observe these objects and draw them just as they appear. This type of drawing is called still life drawing. Artists also draw people to show their appearance, posture, and movement. This is known as human figure drawing.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of still life drawing, identify objects used in still life drawing, understand the meaning of human figure drawing, and practise drawing simple still life objects and a human figure.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF STILL LIFE DRAWING

Still life drawing is the art of drawing non-living objects that are arranged in one place. These objects remain still while the artist observes and draws them.

Examples of objects used for still life drawing include:

• Fruits

• Flower vase

• Bottle

• Cup

• Plate

• Basket

• Books

• Shoes

CHARACTERISTICS OF STILL LIFE DRAWING

A good still life drawing should:

1. Show the correct shape of the objects.

2. Have proper proportion and size.

3. Be neatly arranged.

4. Show light and shade where necessary.

5. Be neat and attractive.

LESSON 2 – MEANING OF HUMAN FIGURE DRAWING

Human figure drawing is the drawing of the whole human body or parts of the body such as the head, hands, legs, or face.

It helps artists understand the shape, size, posture, and movement of the human body.

STEPS IN DRAWING THE HUMAN FIGURE

1. Draw simple guidelines using light lines.

2. Sketch the head.

3. Draw the neck and body.

4. Add the arms and hands.

5. Draw the legs and feet.

6. Add facial features such as the eyes, nose, ears, and mouth.

7. Draw clothing if necessary.

8. Erase unnecessary lines and colour or shade the drawing.

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that still life drawing is the drawing of non-living objects arranged in one place for observation and sketching. They identified common still life objects such as bottles, fruits, flower vases, cups, plates, baskets, books, and shoes.
